==Early life and education==
Hayter was born on 21 October 1800 in [Marylebone](/source/Marylebone), London. He was the second son of the miniaturist [Charles Hayter](/source/Charles_Hayter) and brother of [Sir George Hayter](/source/George_Hayter), also a portraitist. He entered the [Royal Academy schools](/source/Royal_Academy_of_Arts) in 1815, and began to exhibit at the [Royal Academy](/source/Royal_Academy) in the same year. He also exhibited work at the [British Institution](/source/British_Institution) and the [Royal Society of British Artists](/source/Royal_Society_of_British_Artists).

== Career ==
Hayter established himself during the 1820s, with portraits of notable figures such as the [Duke of Wellington](/source/Duke_of_Wellington) and the opera singer, [Giuditta Pasta](/source/Giuditta_Pasta). His portrait drawings, in chalks or crayons, became particularly popular, a number of them being engraved for ''The Court Album'', which contained portraits of the female aristocracy (1850–57).<ref>{{cite web |title=John Hayter |url=http://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/person/mp07089/john-hayter |publisher=National Portrait Gallery |accessdate=14 July 2018 |language=en}}</ref>
