Greig was born in [Moffat](/source/Moffat%2C_Dumfries_and_Galloway), [Dumfriesshire](/source/Dumfriesshire), [Scotland](/source/Scotland) in the [Kingdom of Great Britain](/source/Kingdom_of_Great_Britain) on August 6, 1779, and attended the Edinburgh High School.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Greig, John {{!}} US House of Representatives: History, Art & Archives |url=https://history.house.gov/People/Listing/G/GREIG,-John-(G000449)/ |access-date=2025-03-23 |website=history.house.gov |language=en}}</ref>

Greig was elected as a [Whig](/source/Whig_Party_(United_States)) to the [Twenty-seventh Congress](/source/27th_United_States_Congress), filling the vacancy caused by the resignation of [Francis Granger](/source/Francis_Granger); he served from May 21, 1841, until his resignation on September 25, 1841.
