**John Graham Chambers** (12 February 1843 – 4 March 1883) was a [Welsh](/source/Welsh_people) sportsman. He rowed for [Cambridge](/source/University_of_Cambridge), founded inter-varsity sports, became English Champion walker, coached four winning [Boat-Race](/source/The_Boat_Race) crews, devised the [Queensberry Rules](/source/Marquess_of_Queensberry_rules), staged the [Cup Final](/source/FA_Cup_Final) and the [Thames Regatta](/source/Regatta), instituted championships for [billiards](/source/English_billiards), [boxing](/source/Boxing), cycling, wrestling and [athletics](/source/Track_and_field_athletics), rowed beside [Matthew Webb](/source/Matthew_Webb) as he swam the [English Channel](/source/English_Channel)[1] and edited a national newspaper.

## Early life

Chambers was born in [Llanelly House](/source/Llanelly_House) in the town of [Llanelli](/source/Llanelli), [Carmarthenshire](/source/Carmarthenshire), [Wales](/source/Wales).[1] He was the son of William Chambers, a Welsh landowner of the [Chambers family](/source/Chambers_family). He was educated at [Eton](/source/Eton_College) and [Trinity College](/source/Trinity_College%2C_Cambridge), [Cambridge](/source/University_of_Cambridge), where he graduated as [B.A.](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts), won the Colquhoun Sculls and became President of the University Boat Club.[2]

## Career

Chambers codified the "[Marquess of Queensberry rules](/source/Marquess_of_Queensberry_rules)" upon which modern-day boxing is based. In 1867, he established the rules, which include the required use of [boxing gloves](/source/Boxing_glove), the ten-count, and three-minute rounds. He is a member of the [International Boxing Hall of Fame](/source/International_Boxing_Hall_of_Fame).[3]

He was also a catalyst in the founding of British amateur [athletics](/source/UK_Athletics), having founded the [Amateur Athletic Club](/source/Amateur_Athletic_Club) in 1866, and was present at the formation of the [Amateur Athletic Association](/source/Amateur_Athletic_Association) in 1880.[4][5] In 1866, he won the [7 miles walk](/source/List_of_British_champions_in_10%2C000_metres_walk) event at the inaugural [1866 AAC Championships](/source/1866_AAC_Championships).[6]

Chambers also rowed twice in the Boat Race for Cambridge in 1862 and 1863, losing both times, and coached six Light Blues crews in 1865–66, again defeats, and 1871–74 when Cambridge put together four straight victories, including the first on sliding seats in 1873.

## Later life

Chambers died, aged 40, at 10 Wetherby Terrace, [Earls Court](/source/Earls_Court), London on 4 March 1883[2] and is buried in [Brompton Cemetery](/source/Brompton_Cemetery).
