Gilette served as a sheriff's deputy in [Sangamon County, Illinois](/source/Sangamon_County%2C_Illinois) and [military police](/source/military_police) officer in the [Illinois National Guard](/source/Illinois_National_Guard), where he served in the [Iraq War](/source/Iraq_War) and won the [Bronze Star Medal](/source/Bronze_Star_Medal). He resigned his deputy post in October 2009 after dozens of internal affairs complaints against his conduct were made public.
