**John Coquillon**, [BSC](/source/British_Society_of_Cinematographers) (29 July 1930–1987) was a Dutch-British [cinematographer](/source/Cinematographer), best known internationally for his collaborations with director [Sam Peckinpah](/source/Sam_Peckinpah). He won the [Genie Award for Best Cinematography](/source/Canadian_Screen_Award_for_Best_Cinematography) for his work on [*The Changeling*](/source/The_Changeling_(film)) (1980).[2]

## Biography

Born in [The Hague](/source/The_Hague), [Netherlands](/source/Netherlands), Coquillon started in the [British film industry](/source/Cinema_of_the_United_Kingdom) as a [Pinewood Studios](/source/Pinewood_Studios) [clapper loader](/source/Clapper_loader) in the 1950s before becoming a [documentary](/source/Documentary_film) cameraman later in the decade shooting numerous [wildlife](/source/Wildlife) movies throughout [Africa](/source/Africa). Coquillon relocated from Africa back to the [UK](/source/United_Kingdom) in the mid-1960s, working on a number of [Children's Film Foundation](/source/Children's_Film_Foundation) productions. His ability to work speedily and utilize natural light brought him to the attention of writer [Alfred Shaughnessy](/source/Alfred_Shaughnessy), who recommended Coquillon to director [Michael Reeves](/source/Michael_Reeves_(director)) for *[Witchfinder General](/source/Witchfinder_General_(film))* (1968), the first of several [horror films](/source/Horror_film) that he worked on for [American International Pictures](/source/American_International_Pictures).

In 1971, Coquillon began a fruitful working relationship with [Sam Peckinpah](/source/Sam_Peckinpah), first serving as cinematographer for the controversial director's critically acclaimed *[Straw Dogs](/source/Straw_Dogs_(1971_film))*. He later shot Peckinpah's *[Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid](/source/Pat_Garrett_and_Billy_the_Kid)* (1973), *[Cross of Iron](/source/Cross_of_Iron)* (1977), and *[The Osterman Weekend](/source/The_Osterman_Weekend_(film))* (1983). After *Osterman*, the majority of Coquillon's remaining credits were in television, including the [television movie](/source/Television_movie) *[Ivanhoe](/source/Ivanhoe_(1982_film))* (1982) and numerous [miniseries](/source/Miniseries).
