Born in [Christchurch](/source/Christchurch), [New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand), Asiata later lived in [Kalihi, Hawaii](/source/Kalihi%2C_Hawaii) and attended the National Guard Youth Challenge Academy, a [military school](/source/military_school) in [Kapolei](/source/Kapolei%2C_Hawaii). Asiata then moved to [California](/source/California) to attend [Yuba College](/source/Yuba_College). After playing junior college football at Yuba in 2004 and 2005, Asiata transferred to the [University of Nevada, Las Vegas](/source/University_of_Nevada%2C_Las_Vegas), where he played at offensive line for [UNLV Rebels football](/source/UNLV_Rebels_football) from 2007 to 2008.
