# Johan Agrell

**Johan Joachim Agrell** (1 February 1701 – 19 January 1765) was a late German/Swedish [baroque](/source/Baroque_music) [composer](/source/Composer).

He was born in Löth parish, [Memming](https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memming) district, [Östergötland](/source/%C3%96sterg%C3%B6tland), a province in [Sweden](/source/Sweden), and studied in [Uppsala](/source/Uppsala). By 1734 he was a [violinist](/source/Violin) at the Kassel court, travelling in [England](/source/England), [France](/source/France), [Italy](/source/Italy), and elsewhere. From 1746 onward, he was *[Kapellmeister](/source/Kapellmeister)* in [Nuremberg](/source/Nuremberg). He wrote occasional vocal works and numerous [symphonies](/source/Symphony), [harpsichord](/source/Harpsichord) [concertos](/source/Concerto) and [sonatas](/source/Sonata), many of which were published. He was a fluent composer in the north German [galant](/source/Galant) style of the time, and also an appreciated musician and conductor. According to [Per Lindfors](/source/Per_Lindfors), Agrell composed at least 22 symphonies.[1] He died at Nuremberg.

Agrell also used the following variants of his name: Johan Agrelius, Giovanni Agrell, Giovanni Aggrell, Johann Agrell, Johann Joachim Agrell.[2]
