**Ernest Joseph North** [MM](/source/Military_Medal) (23 September 1895 – 24 August 1955) was an English professional [footballer](/source/Association_football). North, who played as a [centre forward](/source/Centre_forward), played for [Sheffield United](/source/Sheffield_United_F.C.), [Arsenal](/source/Arsenal_F.C.), [Reading](/source/Reading_F.C.), [Gillingham](/source/Gillingham_F.C.), [Norwich City](/source/Norwich_City_F.C.), [Watford](/source/Watford_F.C.) and [Northfleet United](/source/Northfleet_United_F.C.). He was also a professional [cricketer](/source/Cricket) for [Middlesex](/source/Middlesex_County_Cricket_Club).[2]

## Career

North's early footballing career was interrupted by [World War I](/source/World_War_I), in which he enlisted and served as an [acting](/source/Acting_(rank)) [sergeant](/source/Sergeant) in the [Royal Engineers](/source/Royal_Engineers) and the [Machine Gun Corps](/source/Machine_Gun_Corps) and then as a [lieutenant](/source/Lieutenant) in the [Tank Corps](/source/Tank_Corps_(United_Kingdom)).[3] North won the [Military Medal](/source/Military_Medal) during the conflict.[4] During this time he also featured as a guest player for [Sheffield United](/source/Sheffield_United_F.C.).[2]

North joined [Arsenal](/source/Arsenal_F.C.) in 1919 as an [amateur](/source/Amateurism). A [centre forward](/source/Centre_forward), he scored on his debut in a [First Division](/source/Football_League_First_Division) match against [Oldham Athletic](/source/Oldham_Athletic_A.F.C.) on 7 February 1920. However, he was used mainly as backup for [Henry White](/source/Henry_White_(footballer,_born_1895)) and [Fred Pagnam](/source/Fred_Pagnam), and made just 23 league appearances (scoring six goals) in three seasons before leaving [Highbury](/source/Arsenal_Stadium) for [Reading](/source/Reading_F.C.) in May 1922.[5][2]

He later played for [Watford](/source/Watford_F.C.), [Norwich City](/source/Norwich_City_F.C.) and [Gillingham](/source/Gillingham_F.C.).[6] After retiring, he was briefly a coach at [Northfleet United](/source/Northfleet_United_F.C.). He also played cricket for [Middlesex](/source/Middlesex_County_Cricket_Club) and later became an [umpire](/source/Umpire_(cricket)) in the [Minor Counties Championship](/source/Minor_Counties_Cricket_Championship).[5][2]
