In 1903–04, then still teenaged Joe Linder played for the [Portage Lakes Hockey Club](/source/Portage_Lakes_Hockey_Club) in [Houghton](/source/Houghton%2C_Michigan), [Michigan](/source/Michigan), which was considered one of the best American teams at the time. He led his team to a victory over the [Winnipeg Victorias](/source/Winnipeg_Victorias), which marked the first time an American team had ever beaten them. Linder was instrumental in the victory.
