'''Joseph Patrick Hamill''' (born 25 February 1984) is a Scottish professional [footballer](/source/Association_football). He has played for [Heart of Midlothian](/source/Heart_of_Midlothian_F.C.), [Leicester City](/source/Leicester_City_F.C.), [Livingston](/source/Livingston_F.C.), [Queen of the South](/source/Queen_of_the_South_F.C.), [Raith Rovers](/source/Raith_Rovers_F.C.), [Formartine United](/source/Formartine_United_F.C.), [Airdrieonians](/source/Airdrieonians_F.C.) and [Bonnyrigg Rose](/source/Bonnyrigg_Rose_Athletic_F.C.).

==Career==
Hamill had a spell as a teenager playing for East Stirlingshire Boys Club until he joined the youth development scheme at [Hearts](/source/Heart_of_Midlothian_F.C.), graduating from there to the youth academy in 2000. Known as a hard working and tricky winger, he was promoted in April 2002 to the first team squad after major roles in the Under-18s and Under-21s. He was featured in the side that won Youth League championship in [season 2000–01](/source/2000-01_in_Scottish_football).

Hamill was on the fringes of the first team squad in [season 2002–03](/source/2002%E2%80%9303_Heart_of_Midlothian_F.C._season), however during the following season he started to play more games for the first team, making 20 competitive appearances. He also obtained a massive confidence boost when, in May 2004, he scored the only goal in a [SPL](/source/Scottish_Premier_League) match against [Rangers](/source/Rangers_F.C.) at [Ibrox](/source/Ibrox_Stadium).<ref>{{cite web|title=Rangers 0–1 Hearts|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/scot_prem/3704537.stm|publisher=BBC Sport|date=12 May 2004|access-date=2 July 2014}}</ref>

During the [2004–2005 season](/source/2004-05_Heart_of_Midlothian_F.C._season), Hamill gained competitive European experience by playing during the Tynecastle outfit's [UEFA Cup](/source/UEFA_Cup) campaign. He also scored the winner in the [Edinburgh derby](/source/Edinburgh_derby) against [Hibernian](/source/Hibernian_F.C.) on 24 October 2004.<ref>{{cite web|title=Hearts 2–1 Hibernian|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/scot_prem/3764218.stm|publisher=BBC Sport|date=24 October 2004|access-date=2 July 2014}}</ref>

In August 2005, Hamill was signed by his former Hearts boss [Craig Levein](/source/Craig_Levein) for [Leicester City](/source/Leicester_City_F.C.) in the English [Championship](/source/Football_League_Championship), joining former ''Jambo'' teammates [Mark de Vries](/source/Mark_de_Vries), [Alan Maybury](/source/Alan_Maybury) and [Patrick Kisnorbo](/source/Patrick_Kisnorbo).<ref>{{cite web|title=Hamill swaps Hearts for Leicester|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/h/heart_of_midlothian/4143942.stm|publisher=BBC Sport|date=11 August 2005|access-date=2 July 2014}}</ref> He scored his first goal for the club after 37 minutes of his debut in a [League Cup](/source/Football_League_Cup) defeat of [Bury](/source/Bury_F.C.)<ref>{{cite web|title=Bury 0–3 Leicester|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/league_cup/4168396.stm|publisher=BBC Sport|date=23 August 2005|access-date=2 July 2014}}</ref> and made his league debut a week later, coming off the bench in the 1–1 draw away to [Hull City](/source/Hull_City_A.F.C.).

On 28 July 2006, it was announced that Hamill had parted ways with Leicester City after just 11 months at the club, having his contract terminated by mutual consent.<ref>{{cite web|title=Foxes axe Hamill|url=http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11712/2385205/foxes-axe-hamill|publisher=Sky Sports|last=Fudge|first=Simon|date=28 July 2006|accessdate=2 July 2014}}</ref> His then manager [Rob Kelly](/source/Rob_Kelly), who had replaced Levein in early 2006, said that Hamill had left the club to seek first team football elsewhere. He also said Hamill was a smashing lad and never caused an ounce of trouble at the club.

On 2 August 2006, he joined [Scottish First Division](/source/Scottish_Football_League_First_Division) club [Livingston](/source/Livingston_F.C.) on a [free transfer](/source/free_transfer_(soccer)).<ref>{{cite web|title=Hamill makes switch to Livingston|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/l/livingston/5232618.stm|publisher=BBC Sport|date=2 August 2006|access-date=2 July 2014}}</ref> On 29 January 2010, [Dumfries](/source/Dumfries) club [Queen of the South](/source/Queen_of_the_South_F.C.) confirmed that Hamill had signed on loan with [Steve Tosh](/source/Steve_Tosh) moving in the opposite direction.<ref>{{cite web|title=Queens boss transfer swoop|url=http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/local-sport/queens-boss-transfer-swoop-2595854|publisher=Dumfries & Galloway Standard|date=3 February 2010|accessdate=2 July 2014}}</ref> After returning to Livingston, Hamill went out on loan again, this time to Swedish club [Östersunds FK](/source/%C3%96stersunds_FK) on a six-month deal.<ref>{{cite web|title=Hamill goes as Barr signs on|url=http://www.livingstonfc.co.uk/news/news_20100801_1.php|publisher=Livingston F.C.|date=1 August 2010|accessdate=2 July 2014}}</ref> Upon his return to Livingston, Hamill was involved in the squad as the club won the [Second Division](/source/Scottish_Football_League_Second_Division) title.<ref>{{cite web|title=Livingston Lions roar back into First Division|url=http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/local-sport/livingston-lions-roar-back-first-2572268|publisher=West Lothian Courier|date=14 April 2011|accessdate=2 July 2014}}</ref>
