'''''Joe Danger''''' is a 2010 [platform](/source/platform_game) [racing game](/source/Racing_video_game) developed and published by British studio [Hello Games](/source/Hello_Games). In the game, the player controls the eponymous [daredevil](/source/stunt_performer) and navigates courses within a set amount of time, aiming to complete enough objectives to continue to further rounds.

''Joe Danger'' was released for the [PlayStation 3](/source/PlayStation_3), via the [PlayStation Network](/source/PlayStation_Network), in June 2010, after Hello Games originally chose to publish it exclusively with [Sony Computer Entertainment](/source/Sony_Interactive_Entertainment). A "Special Edition" for the [Xbox 360](/source/Xbox_360), via the [Xbox Live Arcade](/source/Xbox_Live_Arcade), was released in December 2011, followed by an [iOS](/source/iOS) spin off in January 2013 and a version for [Android](/source/Android_(operating_system)) in April 2015.<ref>{{cite web|title = Joe Danger - Android Apps on Google Play|url = https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.co.hellogames.jdtouch|website = play.google.com|access-date = 5 October 2015|archive-date = 17 November 2015|archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20151117142329/https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.co.hellogames.jdtouch|url-status = live}}</ref>

''Joe Danger'' received generally positive reviews; most reviewers praised the accessible gameplay and the ability to edit courses while playing them. Some suggested the game would have benefited from more options, such as sharing and rating user-generated content, and criticised the lack of an online multiplayer mode. Hello Games subsequently released [downloadable content](/source/downloadable_content) to add features that users and reviewers had requested in the months following the game's release. Using leaderboard statistics, ''Joe Danger'' was estimated to have sold at least 108,000 units in its first three months on sale.{{Overly detailed inline|date=October 2024}} It was nominated for several awards, including the grand prize at the 2010 [Independent Games Festival](/source/Independent_Games_Festival).

==Gameplay==
The player controls the titular motorbike stuntman Joe Danger and guides him through ten trials to defeat his nemeses, the members of Team Nasty.<ref name=PlayTop50/> The game uses elements of both [racing](/source/racing_video_game) and [side-scrolling](/source/Side-scrolling_video_game) [platform](/source/platform_game) genres<ref name=EscapistR /> in which the protagonist can move to the right and, by reversing, to the left as well as hopping over and ducking under various obstacles.<ref name=GRreview>{{cite web |url=http://www.gamesradar.com/joe-danger-first-great-download-game-of-2010/ |title=Joe Danger: First great download game of 2010 |first=David |last=Houghton |work=[GamesRadar](/source/GamesRadar) |date=16 November 2009 |access-date=11 October 2011 |archive-date=3 November 2011 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20111103025102/http://www.gamesradar.com/joe-danger-first-great-download-game-of-2010/ |url-status=live }}</ref>{{Clarify|date=September 2024}} Although the game is based on a two-dimensional plane, some of its courses are designed with three layers accessible by changing lanes.<ref name="EGreview" /> The bike is controllable in the air, allowing various tricks to be performed, for which points are awarded with higher scores awarded for long trick sequences,<ref name=GRreview /> and for manoeuvring onto targets.<ref name=GuardianR>{{cite news |url=https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2010/jun/13/joe-danger-game-review |title=Joe Danger – Game review |first=Will |last=Freeman |work=The Guardian |date=13 June 2010 |location=London |issn=0261-3077 |oclc=60623878 |access-date=11 October 2011 |archive-date=3 April 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150403030038/http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2010/jun/13/joe-danger-game-review |url-status=live }}</ref> Executing a stunt will build a "boost meter",<ref name=EscapistR/> which is used to increases Joe's speed, but drains the meter.<ref name=EGreview/><ref name=G4TV/><ref name=AVClub/> The Select button is used to teleport Joe back to the last checkpoint passed.<ref name=TelegraphR />

The primary goal in each level is to collect as many "stars" as possible. A star is collected for completing an objective, and once enough are collected, the next course is unlocked.<ref name=1UPreview /> The player is free to choose which objectives to complete, with the option of replaying a level to earn more stars. The most common objective is to finish a course within a time limit with as many points as possible. ''Joe Danger'' contains a [sandbox mode](/source/sandbox_mode), which allows the player to [drag and drop](/source/drag_and_drop) objects onto the course to customise levels.<ref name=EGreview /> This mode is integrated into some single-player levels where the game may instruct the player to introduce obstacles such as ramps to access later sections.<ref name=IGNreview /> New levels can be shared online with friends via the [PlayStation Network](/source/PlayStation_Network).<ref name=GIReview /> The game has a [split screen](/source/split_screen_(computer_graphics)) multiplayer mode for up to four players on a selection of specially-made tracks.<ref name=AVClub /> There is leaderboard support, initially limited to those on the player's PlayStation Network friend list.<ref name=G4TV />

''Joe Danger'' arose from the team's wish to make "something that puts a smile on people's faces" similar to games such as ''[Mario Kart](/source/Mario_Kart)'' and ''[Micro Machines](/source/Micro_Machines)''.<ref name="Edgeint">{{cite magazine|url=http://www.next-gen.biz/features/hello-hello-games|title=Hello, Hello Games|last=Wiltshire|first=Alex|date=6 August 2009|publisher=next-gen.biz|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090809140606/http://www.next-gen.biz/features/hello-hello-games|archive-date=9 August 2009|magazine=[Edge](/source/Edge_(magazine))|access-date=11 October 2011}}</ref> An [Evel Knievel](/source/Evel_Knievel) toy was a main source of inspiration for the "Joe" character; the team had fun "firing that stunt cycle out of windows and down halls".<ref name=GamaIGF>{{cite web |url=http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/27042/Road_To_The_IGF_Hello_Games_Talks_Joe_Danger.php |title=Road to the IGF: Hello Games Talks Joe Danger |first=Leigh |last=Alexander |publisher=[Gamasutra](/source/Gamasutra) |date=16 February 2010 |access-date=11 October 2011 |archive-date=19 October 2011 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20111019183649/http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/27042/Road_To_The_IGF_Hello_Games_Talks_Joe_Danger.php |url-status=dead }}</ref> Nevertheless, Murray likened work as an independent developer to "the reality of eating ice cream every day for every meal" as the novelty of working for themselves wore off.<ref name=GameSpotWhining>{{cite web |url=http://www.gamespot.com/articles/team-bondi-had-it-easy-joe-danger-dev-voices-the-indie-plight/1100-6324662/ |title="Team Bondi had it easy" – Joe Danger dev voices the indie plight |first=Alex |last=Sassoon Coby |publisher=[GameSpot](/source/GameSpot) |date=21 July 2011 |access-date=11 October 2011 |archive-date=3 January 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150103134827/http://www.gamespot.com/articles/team-bondi-had-it-easy-joe-danger-dev-voices-the-indie-plight/1100-6324662/ |url-status=live }}</ref> The team often spent more than 60 hours a week working on the project because of the "unrealistic" time scales for development and with only four team members, each had to fulfil several roles; they had no [public relations](/source/public_relations) representative nor did they have a business manager or a designer.<ref name="gamasutra" /><ref name=GameSpotWhining/> No [software design document](/source/Software_design_description) was made throughout the production of ''Joe Danger'', since the team felt they understood each other's ideas.<ref name=EGExpo />

The game was announced on the developers' website on 23 September 2009 and given its first public showcase in November 2009 at the [Eurogamer Expo](/source/Eurogamer_Expo) in [Earls Court](/source/Earls_Court_Exhibition_Centre).<ref name="PRESS">{{cite web|url=http://www.mcvuk.com/press-releases/read/hello-games-announces-the-world-rsquo-s-first-stunt-em-up-title-joe-danger-for-download-platforms|title=Hello Games Announces the World's First Stunt-Em-Up Title Joe Danger For Download Platforms|date=30 September 2009|website=[MCV](/source/MCV_(magazine))|access-date=12 October 2011|archive-date=3 April 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150403084701/http://www.mcvuk.com/press-releases/read/hello-games-announces-the-world-rsquo-s-first-stunt-em-up-title-joe-danger-for-download-platforms|url-status=live}}</ref> The team used this event as an opportunity for extensive [playtest](/source/playtest)ing, receiving feedback from those playing the game and creating new [software build](/source/software_build)s for each day of the expo. Murray cited numerous "happy accidents" during development, which led to incorporation of various features into the end product. An example of this was a bug in the programming which enabled players to jump as often as they liked in mid-air; the team decided this was fun and incorporated it as a double jump.<ref name=EGExpo>{{cite web |url=http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-10-01-eurogamer-expo-sessions-hello-games-looks-back-at-joe-danger-interview |title=Eurogamer Expo Sessions: Hello Games looks back at Joe Danger Interview |first=Tom |last=Bramwell |publisher=[Eurogamer](/source/Eurogamer) |date=2 October 2010 |access-date=10 October 2011 |archive-date=13 September 2011 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110913112118/http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-10-01-eurogamer-expo-sessions-hello-games-looks-back-at-joe-danger-interview |url-status=live }}</ref>

Hello Games struggled to find a third-party publisher for the game. Some of the reasons include worries about the lack of potential for [porting](/source/game_port) it to other platforms, and comments such as "collecting giant coins feels unrealistic to me", and "we want games that are less about fun right now".<ref name=":1">{{Cite web|url=https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2010/07/lack-of-monkeys-caused-joe-danger-publishing-woes/|title=Lack of monkeys caused PS3's Joe Danger publishing woes|last=Webster|first=Andrew|date=13 July 2010|website=Ars Technica|access-date=20 June 2016|archive-date=30 June 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160630224220/http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2010/07/lack-of-monkeys-caused-joe-danger-publishing-woes/|url-status=live}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/13/joe-danger-dev-explains-why-publishers-dont-get-downloadable/ |title=Joe Danger dev explains why publishers don't get downloadable games |first=Kyle |last=Orland |publisher=Joystiq |date=13 July 2010 |access-date=11 October 2011 |archive-date=17 July 2011 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110717084017/http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/13/joe-danger-dev-explains-why-publishers-dont-get-downloadable/ |url-status=live }}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.develop-online.net/news/no-monkeys-why-publishers-nixed-joe-danger/0107336|title="No monkeys?!": Why publishers nixed Joe Danger|last=Crossley|first=Rob|date=13 July 2010|website=Develop Online|access-date=20 June 2016|archive-date=5 June 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160605071421/http://www.develop-online.net/news/no-monkeys-why-publishers-nixed-joe-danger/0107336|url-status=dead}}</ref> One prospective publisher intimated that they might have published the game if the main character had been a monkey.<ref name=":1" /> When players were invited to make suggestions for additional characters, there was popular support for the monkey idea; this led to the introduction of a downloadable bonus character, Chuckles the Chimp.<ref name=bonuschars /> After nine months looking for a publisher, the team ran out of money. Since the release of ''Special Edition'', a [spin-off](/source/Spin-off_(media)) version for [iOS](/source/iOS) and [Android](/source/Android_(operating_system)) devices has been in development. ===2022 re-release===
The game was re-released on 27 January 2022 after Hello Games received an email from the father of an [autistic](/source/Autism) child, explaining how the game had become an enabling mechanism for his son's social interaction and a coping and reward mechanism for stressful situations and adding that due to changes to Apple's iOS operating system, the game would no longer run on modern devices. Hello Games said the message "broke [their] hearts and made [them] want to set things right", so they rebuilt the game as a hobby project and upgraded the eight year old game to modern technology.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.theguardian.com/games/2022/jan/28/broke-our-hearts-boy-with-autism-inspires-relaunch-of-popular-game|title='Broke our hearts': autistic boy inspires relaunch of popular game|last=Lock|first=Samantha|date=28 January 2022|website=The Guardian|access-date=28 January 2022|archive-date=28 January 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220128045144/https://www.theguardian.com/games/2022/jan/28/broke-our-hearts-boy-with-autism-inspires-relaunch-of-popular-game|url-status=live}}</ref>

The single-player gameplay mode of ''Joe Danger'' was generally well received by critics. The game's accessibility was a source of praise; according to Eric Neigher of ''[1UP.com](/source/1UP.com)'', it allows for "five-minute sprints" of gameplay, although more in-depth options take up more time.<ref name=1UPreview /> ''[IGN](/source/IGN)''{{'}}s Daemon Hatfield compared the game favourably to [Nintendo Entertainment System](/source/Nintendo_Entertainment_System) launch title ''[Excitebike](/source/Excitebike)'', and said that ''Joe Danger'' felt like a Nintendo game.<ref name=IGNreview /> Other critics focused on similarities to ''Super Mario Bros.'', such as [non-linear level progression](/source/Nonlinear_gameplay) (the ability to play levels in any order, providing that the player has earned enough stars to "unlock" the level), the encouragement to play through multiple times to complete every objective, and the use of platforms.<ref name=AVClub /><ref name=1UPreview /> Another influences noted with favour by critics was the combo system, which some compared with the ''[Tony Hawk's](/source/Tony_Hawk's_(series))'' [series](/source/Tony_Hawk's_(series)) of [skateboarding](/source/skateboarding) games.<ref name=GIReview /> Comments were also made on the influence of early ''Sonic the Hedgehog'' titles.<ref name=EGreview /> The cheerful, cartoon-like nature of ''Joe Danger''{{'s}} artwork was well received; ''Eurogamer''{{'}}s Tom Bramwell said "I've worked on games websites for over a decade and not enough games are happy and colourful. This one is. More of this, please, everyone."<ref name=EGint />

Opinions were less uniformly complimentary about other modes of the game. Scott Alan Marriott of [G4 TV](/source/G4_(U.S._TV_channel)) was disappointed with the shortage of options in multiplayer modes, in particular the inability to play against others online.<ref name=G4TV /> The game's leaderboard feature was another source of criticism, with several reviewers noting severe [lag](/source/lag_(video_games)) issues.<ref name=EGreview /> ''[The Daily Telegraph](/source/The_Daily_Telegraph)''{{'s}} Martin Gaston said "it would also have been nice to see the game give dedicated players the opportunity to study from the world's finest by implementing online replays", an option not originally included;<ref name=TelegraphR /> the decision not to allow sharing custom courses with users outside the player's friend's list was labelled "questionable"<ref name=G4TV /> and "obtuse".<ref name=TelegraphR /> Minor criticisms related to the lack of variety in sound design and background scenery.<ref name=EscapistR /><ref name=1UPreview /> Two months after the initial release, Hello Games' first patch for ''Joe Danger'' contained features to cover most critics' concerns.<ref name=PatchNo1 />
