Connellan was educated at the Christian Brothers' School in [Newry](/source/Newry).<ref name="mcallister" />  He joined [Sinn Féin](/source/Sinn_F%C3%A9in) in 1908<ref name="biog">[http://www.election.demon.co.uk/stormont/biographies.html Biographies of Members of the Northern Ireland House of Commons]</ref> and was prominent in the Newry Sluagh.<ref>C. Connellan was elected to the Newry [Board of Governors](/source/Board_of_Governors) in 1920, serving until 1922. In the [1929 Northern Ireland general election](/source/1929_Northern_Ireland_general_election), he was elected in [South Armagh](/source/South_Armagh_(Northern_Ireland_Parliament_constituency)), but stood down in [1933](/source/1933_Northern_Ireland_general_election).<ref name="biog" />

In [1949](/source/1949_Northern_Ireland_general_election), Connellan was elected to the [Northern Ireland House of Commons](/source/Northern_Ireland_House_of_Commons), representing [South Down](/source/South_Down_(Northern_Ireland_Parliament_constituency)).
