**Joseph Bonson** (19 June 1936 – 29 November 1991) was an English professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played for several clubs during the 1950s and 1960s.

## Career

Bonson started his career at [Wolverhampton Wanderers](/source/Wolverhampton_Wanderers_F.C.), working his way through their youth ranks including playing in the [1954 FA Youth Cup Final](/source/FA_Youth_Cup_Finals_of_the_1950s#1953.2F54:_Manchester_United_v._Wolverhampton_Wanderers_.284-4_and_1-0.2C_5-4_Aggregate.29), losing to [Manchester United](/source/Manchester_United_F.C.). He graduated to the first team and made his debut on 1 January 1957 in a 3–2 win at [Sunderland](/source/Sunderland_A.F.C.), the first of 11 consecutive starts during which he scored 6 goals. However, due to a wealth of striking talent at the club, he was deemed surplus to requirements and sold to [Cardiff City](/source/Cardiff_City_F.C.) for £7,000 at the end of the season.

He joined the Bluebirds as a replacement for [Johnny Nicholls](/source/Johnny_Nicholls), who had left the club to join [Exeter City](/source/Exeter_City_F.C.) and made a goalscoring debut for the club in a 1–1 draw with [Ipswich Town](/source/Ipswich_Town_F.C.) in November 1957. He finished the season with 12 goals in a total of 25 appearances.[2]

During his time at Cardiff he formed two formidable strike partnerships with two [Wales](/source/Wales_national_football_team) internationals, first with [Ron Hewitt](/source/Ron_Hewitt_(footballer,_born_1928)) and then with [Derek Tapscott](/source/Derek_Tapscott), after he joined the club from [Arsenal](/source/Arsenal_F.C.). Bonsons's most prolific year came in the [1958–59 season](/source/1958%E2%80%9359_in_English_football) when he scored 18 times for the club. At the end of the season he was transferred to [Scunthorpe United](/source/Scunthorpe_United_F.C.) in exchange for [Peter Donnelly](/source/Peter_Donnelly_(footballer_born_1936)).

Bonson went on to spend the rest of his career playing in the lower leagues of English football with spells at [Doncaster Rovers](/source/Doncaster_Rovers_F.C.), [Newport County](/source/Newport_County_A.F.C.), [Brentford](/source/Brentford_F.C.) and [Lincoln City](/source/Lincoln_City_F.C.).[2]

He died in 1991.
