'''Job Boretsky''' ({{langx|uk|link=no|Йов}}, secular name Ivan Matfeyevich Boretsky, {{langx|pl|link=no|Iwan Borecki}}, died 2 March 1631) was the [Metropolitan of Kiev, Galicia and all Rus'](/source/Metropolis_of_Kiev%2C_Galicia_and_all_Rus'_(1620%E2%80%931686)){{efn|The title is also known as the '''Metropolis of Kiev, Halych and all Rus'''' or '''Metropolis of Kyiv, Halychyna, and All-Rus''''. The name "[Galicia](/source/Galicia_(Eastern_Europe))" is a [Latinized form](/source/Latinized_name) of [Halych](/source/Principality_of_Halych), one of several regional principalities of the medieval state of [Kievan Rus'](/source/Kievan_Rus').}} in the [Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople](/source/Ecumenical_Patriarchate_of_Constantinople) in the [Eastern Orthodox Church](/source/Eastern_Orthodox_Church) from 1620 to 1631. He was a Ruthenian national, born in [Bircza](/source/Bircza), [Ruthenian Voivodeship](/source/Ruthenian_Voivodeship) in the [Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth](/source/Polish%E2%80%93Lithuanian_Commonwealth) at an unknown date. He died in [Kyiv](/source/Kyiv). As [Metropolitan of Kiev, Galicia and all Rus'](/source/List_of_Metropolitans_and_Patriarchs_of_Kiev) he was known as an outstanding church leader, educator, and defender of the Eastern Orthodox faith.

== Biography ==
His family came from Bircha ([Bircza](/source/Bircza)) in [Galicia](/source/Galicia_(Eastern_Europe)). He was educated at the [Lviv](/source/Lviv) [Dormition Brotherhood](/source/Lviv_Dormition_Brotherhood) School and abroad. He worked as a teacher and rector at the Lviv Dormition Brotherhood School (1604–5) and was the first rector of the Kyiv Epiphany Brotherhood School (1615–18). In 1619, he became hegumen of [St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery](/source/St._Michael's_Golden-Domed_Monastery) of [Kyiv](/source/Kiev).

In August 1620 the [patriarch of Jerusalem](/source/Lists_of_Patriarchs_of_Jerusalem), [Theophanes III](/source/Theophanes_III), ordained Boretsky [metropolitan of Kyiv, Halychyna, and All-Rus'.](/source/List_of_Metropolitans_and_Patriarchs_of_Kiev) Boretsky had a strong influence on the [Cossacks](/source/Cossacks) under [Petro Konashevych-Sahaidachny](/source/Petro_Konashevych-Sahaidachny)'s hetmancy. As, metropolitan Boretsky composed a petition in defense of the Orthodox hierarchy entitled Protestacja (1621). Along with the [Greek-Catholic](/source/Greek-Catholic) [Metropolitan bishop of Kyiv](/source/List_of_Major_Archbishops_of_Kyiv-Halych) [Josyf Veliamyn Rutsky](/source/Josyf_Veliamyn_Rutsky), he favoured a general reconciliation within the Ukrainian church, but failed to gain the support of the Cossacks for his plans. A prolific translator, Boretsky also wrote poems honouring saints, petitions, prefaces, and edicts. "Perestoroha" is attributed to him. He was the co-author of "Apolleia Apolohii" (A Refutation of 'A Defense,' 1628) and the translator of "Antolohion" from the Greek (1619). Boretsky also lent money to Kyivan printer Tymofiy Verbytskyi and owned the building in [Podil](/source/Podil) which housed the printing house managed by Verbytskyi's colleague [Spiridon Sobol](/source/Spiridon_Sobol). An appeal to Boretsky is contained in Verbytskyi's ''[Horologion](/source/Horologion)'', which was published in 1625.<ref>{{Cite web|title=Боротьба за книговидання в ранньомодерній Україні: конкуренція, прибутки, читачі, заборони|date=2026-01-26|url=https://tyzhden.ua/borotba-za-knyhovydannia-v-rannomodernij-ukraini-konkurentsiia-prybutky-chytachi-zaborony/|access-date=2026-01-27}}</ref>
