Australian botanist and mycologist (1930–2023)

**Joan Winifred Cribb** [OAM](/source/Medal_of_the_Order_of_Australia) (née **Herbert**; 14 April 1930 – 17 October 2023) was an Australian botanist and [mycologist](/source/Mycology).

## Life and career

Joan Winifred Herbert was born in [Brisbane](/source/Brisbane), Queensland, the daughter of botanists Vera and [Desmond Herbert](/source/Desmond_Herbert).[1] She graduated from the [University of Queensland](/source/University_of_Queensland) with a Bachelor of Science with Honours and a Master of Science. She married fellow botanist [Alan Cribb](/source/Alan_Cribb) in 1954, and several years later joined him at the University of Queensland as a part-time lecturer and tutor.[2]

Cribb specialised in [gasteroid fungi](/source/Gasteroid_fungi), describing twenty-one new species in that group, as well as fourteen new species of [marine fungi](/source/Marine_fungi).[2] For over 45 years Joan Cribb travelled over Queensland discovering and recording gasteromycetes.[1] She and her husband also investigated algae-inhabiting fungi found in marine habitats[3] and have recorded occurrences of freshwater fungi in Queensland waterways.

Cribb was awarded the [Australian Natural History Medallion](/source/Australian_Natural_History_Medallion) in 1994. In the [2020 Australia Day Honours](/source/2020_Australia_Day_Honours) she was awarded the [Medal of the Order of Australia](/source/Order_of_Australia) for "service to higher education as a botanist, and to the community".[4]

Cribb died on 17 October 2023, at the age of 93.[5]

The secotioid fungi genus *[Cribbea](/source/Cribbea)* was named after her.[6] Fungus species named after her include *[Hymenogaster cribbiae](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cortinarius_cribbiae&action=edit&redlink=1)*[7] and *[Stephanospora cribbae](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Stephanospora_cribbae&action=edit&redlink=1)*.[8]

The standard [author abbreviation](/source/List_of_botanists_by_author_abbreviation_(A)) J.W.Cribb is used to indicate this person as the author when [citing](/source/Author_citation_(botany)) a [botanical name](/source/Botanical_name).[9]
