'''Jinwidae''' ({{Korean|hangul=진위대|hanja=鎭衛隊}}) was an organization of the [Imperial Korean Army](/source/Imperial_Korean_Army) established in September 1895 by [Gojong of Korea](/source/Gojong_of_Korea) when he knew that [Hullyŏndae](/source/Hully%C5%8Fndae) was part of the assassination of [Empress Myeongseong](/source/Empress_Myeongseong).

== History ==
Jinwidae was a force deployed in the countryside. At first, two battalions were formed. One was deployed in [Jeonju](/source/Jeonju), and the other one was deployed in [Pyongyang](/source/Pyongyang). One battalion included less than 500 men, including the officers.<ref name=":0" /> In 1897, 10,000 Won was deployed for Jinwidae.<ref>{{Cite web |title=자료일람 {{!}} 한국사데이터베이스 |url=https://db.history.go.kr/item/level.do?setId=296&totalCount=296&itemId=mk&synonym=off&chinessChar=on&page=1&pre_page=1&brokerPagingInfo=&types=&searchSubjectClass=&position=12&levelId=mk_007_0010_0460&searchKeywordType=BI&searchKeywordMethod=EQ&searchKeyword=%E9%8E%AD%E8%A1%9B%E9%9A%8A&searchKeywordConjunction=AND |access-date=2022-07-06 |website=db.history.go.kr}}</ref> In July 1900, Jinwidae was reassigned with 6 regiments.<ref name=":0" /> Jibangdae, which comprised an old-style army, joined Jinwidae in September 1900. By August 1901, Jinwidae had 6 regiments of 18 battalions which is 18,000 men in total. 1 Regiment included about 2,000 men.<ref name=우리역사넷>{{Cite web |title=우리역사넷 |url=http://contents.history.go.kr/front/tg/view.do?treeId=0100&levelId=tg_004_1030&whereStr=@where+%7B+IDX_TITLE(HASALL%7C%27%EC%A7%84%EC%9C%84%EB%8C%80%27%7C100000%7C0)+or+IDX_CONTENT(HASALL%7C%27%EC%A7%84%EC%9C%84%EB%8C%80%27%7C100%7C0)+or+IDX_ALL(HASALL%7C%27%EC%A7%84%EC%9C%84%EB%8C%80%27%7C1%7C0)+%7D |access-date=2022-04-17 |website=contents.history.go.kr}}</ref>
However, after [Russo-Japanese War](/source/Russo-Japanese_War) ended with the victory of [Empire of Japan](/source/Empire_of_Japan), Jinwidae was shrinking in Numbers. Eighteen battalions shrank to 8 battalions, making it less than 3,000 men.<ref name=":0" />

== Dissolution ==
Jinwidae was planned to be dismissed after the [Japan-Korea Treaty of 1907](/source/Japan-Korea_Treaty_of_1907) was signed. When Siwidae was dismissed and the [Battle of Namdaemun](/source/Battle_of_Namdaemun) happened, this news was told to soldiers of Jinwidae. Jinwidae fought against the Imperial Japanese Army. With the [Righteous army](/source/Righteous_army), much Jinwidae personnel fought against Japan.<ref name=":0">{{Cite web |title=진위대(鎭衛隊)|url=https://encykorea.aks.ac.kr/Article/E0054827 |access-date=2022-03-31 |website=[Encyclopedia of Korean Culture](/source/Encyclopedia_of_Korean_Culture)}}</ref> However, Jinwidae was dismissed as was planned. By 3 September 1907, every force of Jinwidae was dismissed.<ref>{{Cite web |title=한국사데이터베이스 |url=http://db.history.go.kr/item/level.do?setId=41&totalCount=41&itemId=hdsr&synonym=off&chinessChar=on&page=1&pre_page=1&brokerPagingInfo=&position=1&levelId=hdsr_001_0020_0070_0010&searchKeywordType=BI&searchKeywordMethod=EQ&searchKeyword=%EC%8B%9C%EC%9C%84+%EC%A0%9C+1%EC%97%B0%EB%8C%80&searchKeywordConjunction=AND |access-date=2022-03-31 |website=db.history.go.kr}}</ref>

== Purpose ==
Jinwidae was the army that was deployed in the countryside. With Jibangdae, an old fashioned army, Jinwidae was involved in policing the deployed area, suppressing revolts against the government, and catching criminals of the area.<ref name=우리역사넷/>
