# Jimmy Niven

**James Bryden Niven** (10 February 1861 – 1933)[1][2] was a Scottish international [footballer](/source/Association_football).

Niven was born in the parish of [Kirkpatrick-Juxta](/source/Kirkpatrick-Juxta) near [Moffat](/source/Moffat,_Dumfries_and_Galloway), [Dumfriesshire](/source/Dumfriesshire), the son of James Bryden Niven, Sr. and Elizabeth Saunders.[3]

Niven was one of two Scottish internationalists from Moffat. The other was [James Fraser](/source/James_Fraser_(footballer)).[4] While playing for [Moffat F.C.](/source/Moffat_F.C.),[5] Niven was an awarded a full [Scotland](/source/Scotland_national_football_team) international cap, for having played in the 8–2 defeat of [Ireland](/source/Ireland_national_football_team_(1882%E2%80%931950)) on 14 March 1885. The game was played at the [second Hampden Park](/source/Second_Hampden_Park), later known as [Cathkin Park](/source/Cathkin_Park), and [Alex Higgins](/source/Alex_Higgins_(footballer,_born_1863)) of [Kilmarnock](/source/Kilmarnock_F.C.) scored a hat-trick. This was the only full international cap that both players received.[6]

Niven died in [West Derby](/source/West_Derby), [Lancashire](/source/Lancashire), in 1933.[7]
