He also played in two seasons in [Japan](/source/Nippon_Professional_Baseball) ({{mlby|1972}}–{{mlby|1973}}) for the [Kintetsu Buffaloes](/source/Kintetsu_Buffaloes). Born in [Exeter, California](/source/Exeter%2C_California), he was a switch-hitter who threw right-handed; he stood {{convert|5|ft|10|in}} tall and weighed {{convert|158|lb}}.

Qualls began his pro career in the Cubs' organization in 1964 after graduating from [Tulare Western High School](/source/Tulare_Western_High_School). After five years in the [minor leagues](/source/minor_leagues), he made the [MLB](/source/MLB) roster in 1969 and played 43 games for the Cubs, most of them in utility and pinch-hitting roles. Qualls collected 31 [hits](/source/hit_(baseball)) during his [MLB](/source/MLB) career, including five [doubles](/source/double_(baseball)) and three [triples](/source/triple_(baseball)), [batting](/source/batting_average_(baseball)) .223 with ten [runs batted in](/source/runs_batted_in). He did not hit any MLB home runs. In [NPB](/source/NPB), he hit .252 with 15 [home runs](/source/home_runs) in 162 games played with Kintetsu.
