Mains started his professional baseball career in 1943. That season, he pitched for the [Eastern League](/source/Eastern_League_(1938%E2%80%932020))'s [Utica Braves](/source/Utica_Braves) and went 0–8 with a 6.64 [earned run average](/source/earned_run_average). He also made one start for the Philadelphia Athletics late in the season, a complete-game loss.
