# Jibrail Kassab

**Jibrail Kassab** (born 4 August 1938) is an Iraqi [Chaldean Catholic](/source/Chaldean_Catholic_Church) hierarch who served as [Chaldean Eparch of Saint Thomas the Apostle of Sydney](/source/Chaldean_Catholic_Eparchy_of_Saint_Thomas_the_Apostle_of_Sydney) from 2006 to 2015.[1]

## Biography

Kassab was born in [Tel Keppe](/source/Tel_Keppe), [Iraq](/source/Iraq),[2] to an [Assyrian](/source/Assyrian_people) family. He was ordained a [priest](/source/Priest) on 19 January 1961. Following 35 years of service in the [priesthood](/source/Priesthood), he was elevated to the [episcopate](/source/Episcopate) by the then [Patriarch of Babylon of the Chaldeans](/source/Patriarch_of_Babylon_of_the_Chaldeans), [Mar Raphael I Bidawid](/source/Raphael_I_Bidawid). Upon his installation, his first post was [Archeparc of Basra](/source/Chaldean_Catholic_Archeparchy_of_Basra).

Following the difficult plight of Iraq's Chaldean [Christians](/source/Christianity) during the [Iraq War](/source/Iraq_War), [Pope Benedict XVI](/source/Pope_Benedict_XVI) transferred Kassab to a safer area and created the [Chaldean Catholic Eparchy of Saint Thomas the Apostle of Sydney](/source/Chaldean_Catholic_Eparchy_of_Saint_Thomas_the_Apostle_of_Sydney) to cover all of Australia and New Zealand; he installed Kassab as its eparch in 2006.
