[Tomb of Li Dan](/source/Tomb_of_Li_Dan), a man from Jibin who died in [Xi'an](/source/Xi'an), [China](/source/China) in 564 CE.

**Jibin** ([simplified Chinese](/source/Simplified_Chinese_characters): 罽宾; [traditional Chinese](/source/Traditional_Chinese_characters): 罽賓; [pinyin](/source/Pinyin): *Jìbīn*, [Old Chinese](/source/Old_Chinese): [Eastern Han Chinese](/source/Eastern_Han_Chinese): **kɨas-pin*[1]) is the name of an ancient state in [central Asia](/source/Central_Asia), in the area of [Gandhara](/source/Gandhara) and the [Kabul river](/source/Kabul_river), but the exact location of which is unknown.

## Location

There are several possibilities for the location of Jibin, but the most accepted one is that it is a name of the [Western Regions](/source/Western_Regions) from the [Western Han dynasty](/source/Western_Han_dynasty) to the early [Jin dynasty](/source/Jin_dynasty_(265%E2%80%93420)), namely [Gandhara](/source/Gandhara). Today, roughly equivalent to [Peshawar](/source/Peshawar), [Pakistan](/source/Pakistan). The [Ancient Greeks](/source/Ancient_Greece) called the [Kabul River](/source/Kabul_River) the *Kōphēn*, which could be transliterated as "Jibin", thereby referring to the [alluvial plains](/source/Alluvial_plains) of this river.[2]

## History

Jibin was described in a dedicated section in the *[Book of Han](/source/Book_of_Han)*, Volume 96, Part 1 (*Traditions of the Western Regions*).[3]
