'''Jesus Lock''' is a [lock](/source/lock_(canal)) on the [River Cam](/source/River_Cam) in the north of central [Cambridge](/source/Cambridge), England.<ref>[http://www.cambridge2000.com/cambridge2000/html/0010/PA122680.html Chesterton Road: Jesus Lock], [http://www.cambridge2000.com/ Cambridge 2000].</ref><ref>Nicolas Janberg, [http://en.structurae.de/structures/data/index.cfm?id=s0020288 Jesus Lock], [http://en.structurae.de/ Structurae].</ref><ref>[https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/332039 TL4459: Jesus Lock, Cambridge], [Geograph](/source/Geograph).</ref> This is Lock No. 1 on the navigable portion of the River Cam.<ref name="wikimapia">[http://wikimapia.org/1460497/Jesus-Lock Jock Lock], [Wikimapia](/source/Wikimapia).</ref> It was built in 1836 and is the only lock in the city.<ref>[http://www.urban75.org/photos/cambridge/cam34.html Jesus Lock, River Cam, Cambridge, England], http://www.urban75.org Urban75.org].</ref> Jesus Green Lock Cottage, the former lock-keeper's cottage, is by the lock on Jesus Green. It is owned by the [Conservators of the River Cam](/source/Conservators_of_the_River_Cam) and is rented out to students.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.camconservators.co.uk/jesuslock.html|title=Jesus Lock|work=Conservators of the River Cam|accessdate=17 July 2010}}</ref><ref>{{cite news|url=http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/Cambridge/City-unveils-25m-Jesus-Green-revamp.htm|title=City unveils £2.5m Jesus Green revamp|date=19 August 2008|work=Cambridge City News|accessdate=17 July 2010|archive-date=4 April 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120404175256/http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/Cambridge/City-unveils-25m-Jesus-Green-revamp.htm|url-status=dead}}</ref>

The lock is located north of [Jesus Green](/source/Jesus_Green), which itself is north of [Jesus College](/source/Jesus_College%2C_Cambridge), hence the name. To the north of Jesus Lock is [Chesterton Road](/source/Chesterton_Road%2C_Cambridge) (the [A1303](/source/A1303_road)). To the east (downstream) is [Victoria Avenue Bridge](/source/Victoria_Avenue_Bridge) on [Victoria Avenue](/source/Victoria_Avenue%2C_Cambridge) and beyond that [Midsummer Common](/source/Midsummer_Common), [common land](/source/common_land) still used for [grazing](/source/grazing). Close by just downstream is [Jesus Green Swimming Pool](/source/Jesus_Green_Swimming_Pool), a very long outdoor [lido](/source/Lido_(swimming_pool)).<ref name="wikimapia" />

The stretch of river northeast (downstream) of Jesus Lock is sometimes called the lower river. The stretch between Jesus Lock and [Baits Bite Lock](/source/Baits_Bite_Lock) is much used for [rowing](/source/River_Cam). There are also many residential boats on this stretch, their occupants forming a community who call themselves the Camboaters.<ref>[http://www.camboaters.co.uk/aboutus/ Camboaters Community Association] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100422152114/http://www.camboaters.co.uk/aboutus/ |date=22 April 2010 }}.</ref> The stretch above Jesus Lock is sometimes known as the middle river.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.camconservators.co.uk/notices.asp |title=Cam conservancy notices |accessdate=2008-09-20}}</ref>

== Footbridge ==

'''Jesus Lock footbridge''' on the Cam links Chesterton Road with [Jesus Green](/source/Jesus_Green) for pedestrians next to the lock.<ref>[http://www.cambridge2000.com/cambridge2000/html/0005/P5060859.html Chesterton Road: Jesus Lock pedestrian bridge], [http://www.cambridge2000.com/ Cambridge 2000].</ref><ref>[https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/492495 TL4459: View across Jesus Lock bridge], [Geograph](/source/Geograph).</ref> The bridge has metal trellis railings and a wooden surface for walking. Cyclists are advised to dismount when crossing the bridge.

The bridge was built c.1892, soon after [Victoria Avenue Bridge](/source/Victoria_Avenue_Bridge), close by downstream at the northeast corner of Jesus Green. The next bridge to the southwest (upstream) is [Magdalene Bridge](/source/Magdalene_Bridge).
