'''Jesse Elliston''' (3 March 1806<ref>''England & Wales, Non-Conformist and Non-Parochial Registers, 1567-1970''</ref> – 26 July 1853) was a proprietor of [Elliston & Cavell](/source/Elliston_%26_Cavell), which became the leading [department store](/source/department_store) in [Oxford](/source/Oxford), [England](/source/England).

Elliston was born in [Ipswich](/source/Ipswich), [Suffolk](/source/Suffolk), to James and Mary Ann Elliston. He was baptised a Baptist. He owned a [draper](/source/draper)'s shop in central Oxford when his sister, Sarah Elliston of [Summertown](/source/Summertown%2C_Oxford) in [north Oxford](/source/north_Oxford), married [John Cavell](/source/John_Cavell) on 9 April 1835. As a result, Elliston made Cavell a partner of the shop, which then became known as [Elliston & Cavell](/source/Elliston_%26_Cavell). It went on to become the largest department store in Oxford for many years, until its eventual conversion to a [Debenhams](/source/Debenhams) store.

In 1853, after feeling unwell for a week, the 47-year-old Elliston collapsed and died suddenly while walking in the [Banbury Road](/source/Banbury_Road) on his way to Summertown.<ref>{{cite news |title=Sudden Death of Mr. Jesse Elliston|url=https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000989/18530730/033/0004 |accessdate=29 June 2018 |work=Oxford Chronicle and Berks and Bucks Gazette |date=30 July 1853 |page=4}}</ref> Cavell subsequently took over the running of the shop.
