===San Francisco 49ers===
Newberry joined the 49ers in [1998](/source/1998_San_Francisco_49ers_season), but missed the first nine weeks of the season after suffering a [torn ACL](/source/torn_ACL) in offseason mini-camp. He was inactive for the rest of the season as well. In [1999](/source/1999_San_Francisco_49ers_season) he [started](/source/Starting_lineup) all 16 games, first at [right tackle](/source/Offensive_tackle) then at [right guard](/source/Guard_(American_football)). In [2000](/source/2000_San_Francisco_49ers_season) he started every game again, taking over center duties when [Chris Dalman](/source/Chris_Dalman) suffered a career-ending neck injury in offseason training camp. In 2000, his first season playing center in the NFL, the [offensive line](/source/offensive_line) was third in the league, allowing only 25 [sack](/source/Quarterback_sack)s.
