# Jere Allen

**Jere Allen** is a visual [artist](/source/Artist) and a former professor of art at the [University of Mississippi](/source/University_of_Mississippi).[1][2]

## Life

Allen was born in 1944 in [Selma, Alabama](/source/Selma,_Alabama).[2] He received a BFA degree from the [Ringling School of Art](/source/Ringling_School_of_Art), and an MFA from the [University of Tennessee](/source/University_of_Tennessee).[3][4]

## Work

His work can be described as figurative and is typically inspired by [myths](/source/Mythology) and [symbols](/source/Symbol).he was labeled in 1999 by a regional newspaper as "the Mississippi [Rembrandt](/source/Rembrandt)".[citation needed] [Art and Antiques](/source/Art_and_Antiques) has described Allen as a "modern-day master" known for his "dramatic, electric colors."[citation needed]

In 2003, Allen's work toured Southeast Asia in the Washington-based Meridian International Center's exhibition, *Outward Bound: American Art at the Brink of the Twenty-First Century*.[citation needed]
