# Jer Collison

**Jeremiah Collison** (12 August 1889 – 18 June 1956) was an [Irish](/source/Irish_people) [hurler](/source/Hurling) and [Gaelic footballer](/source/Gaelic_football). Usually lining out in the backs, he was a member of the [Tipperary](/source/Tipperary_county_hurling_team) team that won the [1916 All-Ireland SHC](/source/1916_All-Ireland_Senior_Hurling_Championship).[1]

Collison began his club hurling with the [Toomevara](/source/Toomevara_GAA) club, winning four [championship](/source/Tipperary_Senior_Hurling_Championship) medals between 1910 and 1914. He also played club hurling with [Nenagh Éire Óg](/source/Nenagh_%C3%89ire_%C3%93g_GAA), [Collegians](/source/UCD_GAA) and [Moneygall](/source/Moneygall_GAA).

After lining out for the [Dublin](/source/Dublin_county_hurling_team) senior team in the drawn [1908 All-Ireland SHC](/source/1908_All-Ireland_Senior_Hurling_Championship_final) final with Tipperary, Collison subsequently joined the Tipperary team in 1915. He won his first [Munster SHC](/source/Munster_Senior_Hurling_Championship) medal in 1916, before later winning his sole [All-Ireland SHC](/source/All-Ireland_Senior_Hurling_Championship) medal after Tipperary's defeat of [Kilkenny](/source/Kilkenny_county_hurling_team) in the [final](/source/1916_All-Ireland_Senior_Hurling_Championship_final). He won a second Munster SHC medal in 1917.[citation needed]

Collison also had an active role as a member of the [Old IRA](/source/Irish_Republican_Army_(1919%E2%80%931922)). Appointed O/C of the No.2 Battalion North Tipperary Brigade IRA in 1918, his hurling career ended when he was imprisoned in [Belfast](/source/Belfast) for drilling members of the IRA. During his time at [Crumlin Jail](/source/Crumlin_Jail), Collison went on [hunger strike](/source/Hunger_strike). A supporter of the [Anglo-Irish Treaty](/source/Anglo-Irish_Treaty), Collison later served as a member of the [Free State Army](/source/Free_State_Army) during the [Civil War](/source/Irish_Civil_War).[citation needed]
