'''Jennifer F. Mossop''' (born {{circa|1960}}) is a former [politician](/source/politician) and journalist in [Ontario](/source/Ontario), Canada. She was a [Liberal](/source/Ontario_Liberal_Party) member of the [Legislative Assembly of Ontario](/source/Legislative_Assembly_of_Ontario) from 2003 to 2007 who represented the [Hamilton, Ontario](/source/Hamilton%2C_Ontario) riding of [Stoney Creek](/source/Stoney_Creek_(electoral_district)).

==Background==
Prior to her election, Mossop was a well-known television news anchor and reporter in [Hamilton, Ontario](/source/Hamilton%2C_Ontario). She joined Hamilton television station [CHCH-TV](/source/CHCH-TV) in 1981, and remained a member of the station's reporting team for more than twenty years. She also served as a news anchor for the [Canadian Broadcasting Corporation](/source/Canadian_Broadcasting_Corporation), and wrote articles for the ''[Hamilton Spectator](/source/Hamilton_Spectator)''. Mossop is married to [Dave Betts](/source/Dave_Betts), a musician, currently with the Canadian rock band [Honeymoon Suite](/source/Honeymoon_Suite).

==Politics==
Mossop's election to the Ontario legislature in the [2003 election](/source/2003_Ontario_general_election) took place under unusual circumstances. The original Liberal candidate for Stoney Creek was Tony Magnini, who was not generally regarded as a credible match for the [Progressive Conservative](/source/Progressive_Conservative_Party_of_Ontario) incumbent, [Brad Clark](/source/Brad_Clark). Magnini was forced to resign after serious fraud allegations emerged in mid-campaign, however, and Mossop's last-minute candidacy reinvigorated the Liberal Party's organization in the riding. On election day, Mossop was able to defeat Clark by about 5,000 votes.<ref name="2003 results">{{cite web |url=http://results.elections.on.ca/results/2003_results/valid_votes.jsp?e_code=38&rec=0&district=Stoney+Creek&flag=E&layout=G |archive-url=https://archive.today/20140803112407/http://results.elections.on.ca/results/2003_results/valid_votes.jsp?e_code=38&rec=0&district=Stoney+Creek&flag=E&layout=G |url-status=dead |archive-date=August 3, 2014 |title=Summary of Valid Ballots by Candidate |publisher=Elections Ontario |date=October 2, 2003 |accessdate=2014-03-02 }}</ref><ref>{{cite news |title=Mossop a winner in her first try; Liberal candidate charges in at last minute and knocks off Tory cabinet minister |last=Nolan |first=Dan |newspaper=The Hamilton Spectator |date=October 3, 2003 |page=A6}}</ref>

She was appointed [parliamentary assistant](/source/parliamentary_assistant) to [Madeleine Meilleur](/source/Madeleine_Meilleur), the [Minister of Culture](/source/Ministry_of_Culture_(Ontario)), on October 23, 2003. She later served as parliamentary assistant to the new Minister of Culture [Caroline Di Cocco](/source/Caroline_Di_Cocco).

In June 2007, Mossop announced she would not seek re-election in the [2007 provincial election](/source/2007_Ontario_provincial_election).<ref>{{cite news |title=Hamilton Liberal decides not to run; First-term MPP said not to like political lifestyle |last=Benzie |first=Robert |newspaper=Toronto Star |date=July 12, 2007 |page=A22}}</ref> The Liberal Party chose another journalist, [Nerene Virgin](/source/Nerene_Virgin), as its candidate, but Virgin was defeated by [New Democrat](/source/Ontario_New_Democratic_Party) candidate [Paul Miller](/source/Paul_Miller_(Canadian_politician)) in the redistributed riding of [Hamilton East—Stoney Creek](/source/Hamilton_East%E2%80%94Stoney_Creek_(provincial_electoral_district)).<ref>{{cite news |title=City log |newspaper=The Hamilton Spectator |date=October 5, 2007 |page=A2}}</ref><ref name="2007 results">{{cite web|url=http://elections.on.ca/NR/rdonlyres/AB409CCD-84F3-46FA-B3BD-39AB659EFC2D/0/SummaryofValidBallotsCastforEachCandidate.pdf |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20091007160233/http://www.elections.on.ca/NR/rdonlyres/AB409CCD-84F3-46FA-B3BD-39AB659EFC2D/0/SummaryofValidBallotsCastforEachCandidate.pdf |url-status=dead |archive-date=October 7, 2009 |title=Summary of Valid Ballots Cast for Each Candidate |publisher=Elections Ontario |date=October 10, 2007 |access-date=2014-03-02 |page=6 (xv) }}</ref>
