**Jennifer Lee Garfein Ashton** (born April 23, 1969) is an American [physician](/source/Physician), author and [television](/source/Television) [correspondent](/source/Correspondent). She was chief health and medical editor and chief [medical correspondent](/source/Medical_journalism) for *[ABC News](/source/ABC_News_(United_States))* and *[Good Morning America](/source/Good_Morning_America)*, chief [women's health](/source/Women's_health) correspondent for *[The Dr. Oz Show](/source/The_Dr._Oz_Show)*, and a columnist for *[Cosmopolitan Magazine](/source/Cosmopolitan_Magazine)*. Ashton was also a regular contributor to the ABC daytime program *[GMA3: What You Need to Know](/source/GMA3%3A_What_You_Need_to_Know)* until 2024. She is also a frequent [guest speaker](/source/Guest_speaker) and [moderator](/source/Discussion_moderator) for events raising awareness of women's health issues.[1]

## Early life and education

Ashton was born in [Victorville, California](/source/Victorville%2C_California) to Oscar Garfein, a New York City [cardiologist](/source/Cardiologist), and Dorothy Garfein, a [registered nurse](/source/Registered_nurse).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] Her brother, Evan Garfein, is chief of [plastic surgery](/source/Plastic_surgery) and [reconstructive surgery](/source/Reconstructive_surgery) at [Montefiore Hospital](/source/Montefiore_Medical_Center) in [New York City](/source/New_York_City).[2]

Ashton attended [Horace Mann School](/source/Horace_Mann_School) in [Riverdale](/source/Riverdale%2C_Bronx), New York City,[3] where she studied [French](/source/French_language) and [English](/source/English_studies). She graduated from [Columbia College, Columbia University](/source/Columbia_College%2C_Columbia_University) in 1991 with a [bachelor's degree](/source/Bachelor's_degree) in [art history](/source/Art_history).[4][5] She completed a [medical degree](/source/Doctor_of_medicine) from [Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons](/source/Columbia_College_of_Physicians_and_Surgeons) in 2000.[4][6] While at Columbia, she served as President of her medical school class for all four years and was awarded the Bartlestone Prize in Pharmacology at graduation.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

Upon completion of her residency at Mt. Sinai West (formerly St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital in NYC), she was awarded Chief Resident of the Year, this was the first time this award was ever given in the history of the program. ## Career

Ashton is [double board-certified](/source/Board_certification) in [obstetrics](/source/Obstetrics) and [gynecology](/source/Gynecology), and in obesity medicine.[9] She completed her [residency](/source/Medical_residency) at St. Luke's–Roosevelt Hospital Center (now [Mount Sinai Morningside](/source/Mount_Sinai_Morningside)) in New York.[4][5][8] Ashton has worked as an [attending physician](/source/Attending_physician) at [Englewood Hospital and Medical Center](/source/Englewood_Hospital_and_Medical_Center), affiliated with [Mount Sinai Medical Center](/source/Mount_Sinai_Hospital_(Manhattan)), in [Englewood](/source/Englewood%2C_New_Jersey), New Jersey.[10]

Ashton began her television career in 2006 as the first female medical contributor to the [Fox News Channel](/source/Fox_News).[4][5][11] She appeared on [TLC](/source/TLC_(TV_network))'s *[A Baby Story](/source/A_Baby_Story)*, on [PBS](/source/PBS), and on [Oprah & Friends](/source/Oprah_%26_Friends) [XM radio](/source/XM_radio)'s *The Dr. Oz Show*.[11][12] She has appeared on programs including A Baby Story (TLC), PBS, and The Dr. Oz Show on Oprah & Friends XM radio. In 2009, she joined [CBS News](/source/CBS_News) as a medical correspondent.[4][5] In 2012, she became the medical expert for ABC's daytime wellness series *[The Revolution](/source/The_Revolution_(TV_program))* in 2012,[9][13][14] and later that year joined [ABC News](/source/ABC_News_(United_States)) as a senior medical contributor, making regular appearances on *Good Morning America* and *[ABC World News Tonight](/source/ABC_World_News_Tonight)*.[15][16] In 2013, she became an on-air contributor to *[The Doctors](/source/The_Doctors_(talk_show))*.[17] In March 2020, she served as co-host of *[GMA3: What You Need to Know](/source/GMA3%3A_What_You_Need_to_Know)* (formerly Pandemic: What You Need to Know).[18] She held the roles of chief health and medical editor and chief medical correspondent for ABC News and Good Morning America, becoming the third physician and the first woman to do so.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

Ashton is the author of several books, including *The Body Scoop for Girls* (2009), *Your Body Beautiful* (2012), *Eat This, Not That! When You're Expecting: The Doctor Recommended Plan for Baby and You* (2016), *Life After Suicide* (2019), *The Self Care Solution* (2019), and *The New Normal* (2021). In 2023, she launched *The Dr. Jen Ashton Magazine*, serving as its editor-in-chief. In April 2024, Ashton announced her departure from ABC News to launch a wellness company called Ajenda. She left ABC News in June 2024 upon the expiration of her contract.[19]

## Personal life

On August 31, 1996, Ashton married Robert Ashton Jr, a [thoracic](/source/Thoracic_surgeon) and [cardiac surgeon](/source/Cardiac_surgeon) and later had two children. They divorced in January 2017. Robert Ashton died by suicide on February 11, 2017 after the divorce finalization, [jumping off](/source/Suicide_bridge) the [George Washington Bridge](/source/George_Washington_Bridge) into the [Hudson River](/source/Hudson_River) below.[20] Ashton had made no public mention of the story until June 6, 2018, when she mentioned her and her family's grieving over it in an interview with colleague [George Stephanopoulos](/source/George_Stephanopoulos) on *[Good Morning America](/source/Good_Morning_America)* during a story about the suicide of designer [Kate Spade](/source/Kate_Spade).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

Ashton became engaged to [Boston Red Sox](/source/Boston_Red_Sox) chairman and television producer [Tom Werner](/source/Tom_Werner) in January 2022.[21] They were married on November 5, 2022, at the [Harmonie Club](/source/Harmonie_Club) in New York City, in a traditional [Jewish wedding ceremony](/source/Jewish_wedding) presided over by a rabbi.[22][23]

Ashton has revealed that she learned [Transcendental Meditation](/source/Transcendental_Meditation_technique) through the [David Lynch Foundation](/source/David_Lynch_Foundation).[24]

## Awards and honors

In 2007, Ashton was recognized as a Woman of Achievement by the [Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey](/source/Girl_Scouts_of_Northern_New_Jersey).[10] In 2008, she received the Hope for The Future Award from The Octoberwoman Foundation for Breast Cancer Awareness.[10] While working as CBS News Network’s Medical Correspondent in 2009-2011, Dr. Ashton received the prestigious [Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for Excellence in Journalism](/source/Alfred_I._duPont%E2%80%93Columbia_University_Award).
