Born in [Marietta, Georgia](/source/Marietta%2C_Georgia), Sheppard was Player of the Year in [Georgia](/source/Georgia_(U.S._state)) in 1993 at [McIntosh High School](/source/McIntosh_High_School) in [Peachtree City](/source/Peachtree_City%2C_Georgia).
The {{convert|6|ft|3|in|m|adj=on}} [University of Kentucky](/source/Kentucky_Wildcats_men's_basketball) guard (1993–[1998](/source/1997%E2%80%9398_Kentucky_Wildcats_men's_basketball_team)), was named [Most Outstanding Player](/source/NCAA_basketball_tournament_Most_Outstanding_Player) in the [NCAA tournament](/source/NCAA_Men's_Division_I_Basketball_Championship) in [San Antonio](/source/San_Antonio) in 1998. He played on two national championship teams at the University of Kentucky under [Rick Pitino](/source/Rick_Pitino) in [1996](/source/1995%E2%80%9396_Kentucky_Wildcats_men's_basketball_team) and under [Tubby Smith](/source/Tubby_Smith) in 1998.
The success of his college basketball career did not carry over to the professional level. He played briefly in the [National Basketball Association](/source/National_Basketball_Association) with the [Atlanta Hawks](/source/Atlanta_Hawks) during the [1998-99 season](/source/1998-99_NBA_season), averaging 2.2 points and 1.2 rebounds in 18 games. Sheppard and his wife, Stacey (née Reed, herself a former [Kentucky basketball player](/source/Kentucky_Wildcats_women's_basketball)), have two children and live in [London, Kentucky](/source/London%2C_Kentucky). They are involved with various community activities.
