# Jeff Linton

[Brigadier](/source/Brigadier_(United_Kingdom)) **James Edward Fryer**"**Jeff**"**Linton** [1] (7 May 1909–27 December 1989) was a Welsh [cricketer](/source/Cricket)[2] and [British Army](/source/British_Army) officer. He served with the [Royal Artillery](/source/Royal_Artillery) during [World War II](/source/World_War_II)[3] after previously playing [first-class cricket](/source/First-class_cricket) for [Glamorgan County Cricket Club](/source/Glamorgan_County_Cricket_Club) in the [1932 English cricket season](/source/1932_English_cricket_season) as a right-handed [batsman](/source/Batsman) and right-arm [medium-fast](/source/Fast_bowling) [bowler](/source/Bowler_(cricket)).[4] He also represented the [Egypt national cricket team](/source/Egypt_national_cricket_team).[5]

## Biography

Born in [Llandaff](/source/Llandaff) in 1909,[4] Linton was educated at [Charterhouse School](/source/Charterhouse_School) where he [captained](/source/Captain_(cricket)) the cricket team.[3] He played his only two first-class matches for his native Glamorgan in August 1932 against [Middlesex](/source/Middlesex_County_Cricket_Club) and [Hampshire](/source/Hampshire_County_Cricket_Club).[6] In April 1938 he played twice for Egypt against [HM Martineau's XI](/source/Hubert_Martineau).[7]

He served with the Royal Artillery during World War II, and was awarded the [Distinguished Service Order](/source/Distinguished_Service_Order) in 1944 after escaping from a [prisoner-of-war camp](/source/Prisoner-of-war_camp). He had a distinguished military career, and after the war was elevated to the rank of Brigadier and became a senior instructor in anti-tank warfare at the School of Artillery.[3] He died in [Mexico](/source/Mexico) in 1989.[4]
