Born in [Creve Coeur, Missouri](/source/Creve_Coeur%2C_Missouri), Irwin grew up in [St. Louis County](/source/St._Louis_County%2C_Missouri). Growing up, he studied [piano](/source/piano), [violin](/source/violin) (learning the [Suzuki method](/source/Suzuki_method)), [viola](/source/viola), [trumpet](/source/trumpet), [guitar](/source/guitar), [bass guitar](/source/bass_guitar), [contrabass](/source/contrabass), [baritone horn](/source/baritone_horn), and various [synthesizer](/source/synthesizer)s. Irwin also received vocal training by participating in various area [choirs](/source/choirs). He wrote and performed an [overture](/source/overture) for his 4th grade class' [musical](/source/musical_theater) production of ''Magellan''.
== Education and career ==
In [high school](/source/high_school), he formed his first band, The Mafia. The band was focused on both performing [cover songs](/source/cover_songs) and writing original music. They sometimes doubled as an instrumental [jazz](/source/jazz) combo, playing parties and corporate functions. This was a catalyst for his involvement in school [orchestras](/source/orchestras), jazz ensembles, choirs, and musical productions.
In college, Irwin performed more as a bassist than as a [singer/songwriter](/source/singer%2Fsongwriter). From 1996 to 1999, while living in [Bolivar](/source/Bolivar%2C_Missouri) and [Springfield, Missouri](/source/Springfield%2C_Missouri), he played in a [ska](/source/ska) band as well as various [jazz](/source/jazz) groups. In 1999, he moved to [Nashville, Tennessee](/source/Nashville%2C_Tennessee) to attend [Belmont University](/source/Belmont_University). He immediately began writing and performing with numerous groups, from [rock band](/source/rock_band)s to [orchestra](/source/orchestra)s.
