== History ==
In 2010 Bonwick co-founded a small company called DSSD with [Mike Shapiro](/source/Mike_Shapiro_(programmer)) and Bill Moore, and became chief technical officer.<ref>{{Cite news |title= Meet DSSD, Andy Bechtolsheim's secret chip startup for big data |date= April 4, 2013 |work= Giga Om |author= Stacey Higginbotham |url= http://gigaom.com/2013/04/04/meet-dssd-andy-bechtolsheims-secret-chip-startup-for-big-data/ |archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20130406051043/http://gigaom.com/2013/04/04/meet-dssd-andy-bechtolsheims-secret-chip-startup-for-big-data/ |url-status= dead |archive-date= April 6, 2013 |access-date= March 4, 2017 }}</ref> He co-invented DSSD's system hardware architecture and software. He developed DSSD's whole-system simulator, which enabled the team to explore possible hardware topologies and software algorithms.<ref>{{cite web|last1=Harris|first1=Robin|title=What is DSSD Building?|url=http://storagemojo.com/2013/03/13/what-is-dssd-building/|website=StorageMojo|publisher=TechnoQWAN LLC|access-date=27 July 2016}}</ref> DSSD was acquired by [EMC Corporation](/source/EMC_Corporation) in 2014,<ref>{{Cite news |title= EMC acquires flash storage startup DSSD |author= Sephen Lawson |date= May 5, 2014 |work= Computer World |url= http://www.computerworld.com/article/2489005/data-center/emc-acquires-flash-storage-startup-dssd.html |access-date= March 4, 2017 }}</ref> which then became part of [Dell Technologies](/source/Dell_Technologies) in 2016.
By the end of 2016, Bill Moore had left the company, while Bonwick remained as CTO.<ref>{{Cite news |title= DSSD President quits Dell EMC |author= Chris Mellor |date= December 9, 2016 |work= The Register |url= https://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/12/09/dssd_president_quits_dell_emc/ |access-date= March 4, 2017 }}</ref> The DSSD product, called D5, was cancelled in March 2017.<ref>{{Cite news |title= Dell kills off standalone DSSD D5, scatters remains into other gear: Blueprints and staff shifted to different projects after EMC spent '$1bn' on tech |author= Chris Mellor |date= March 2, 2017 |work= The Register |url= https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/03/02/dell_cans_standalone_dssd/ |access-date= March 4, 2017 }}</ref>

== LZJB ==
Bonwick invented LZJB, a [lossless data compression](/source/lossless_data_compression) algorithm to compress [crash dump](/source/crash_dump)s and data in [ZFS](/source/ZFS). The software is [CDDL](/source/Common_Development_and_Distribution_License) [license licensed](/source/Software). It includes a number of improvements to the [LZRW1](/source/LZRW) algorithm, a member of the [Lempel–Ziv](/source/LZ77_and_LZ78) family of compression algorithms.<ref>{{Cite journal|first1=Y.|last1=Rathore|first2=M.|last2=Ahirwar|first3=R.|last3=Pandey|title=A Brief Study of Data Compression Algorithms|url=https://www.academia.edu/11814232|journal=Journal of Computer Science IJCSIS|year=2013|volume=11|issue=10|pages=90}}</ref> The name LZJB is derived from its parent algorithm and its creator — Lempel Ziv Jeff Bonwick.
