==Early life==
Jean Mary Dawnay was born in Brighton on 22 March 1925.<ref name="Telegraph obituary">{{cite news |title=Princess George Galitzine, 'supermodel' of the 1950s – obituary |url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/obituaries/2016/12/20/princess-george-galitzine-supermodel-1950s-obituary/ |accessdate=22 April 2019 |work=The Daily Telegraph |date=20 December 2016}}</ref> She was the daughter of Frederick Dawnay and Maud (''[née](/source/n%C3%A9e)'' Howard) and was educated at the [City of London School for Girls](/source/City_of_London_School_for_Girls) and the [Central School of Art and Design](/source/Central_School_of_Art_and_Design). 

==Career==
Having joined the [WAAF](/source/Women's_Auxiliary_Air_Force) in 1943, she served in World War II under [Leo Marks](/source/Leo_Marks) in the [Special Operations Executive](/source/Special_Operations_Executive) in [Baker Street](/source/64_Baker_Street) and at [Bletchley Park](/source/Bletchley_Park). Throughout her career she was photographed by many leading photographers including [John French](/source/John_French_(photographer)), Richard Dormer, [Cecil Beaton](/source/Cecil_Beaton), [Norman Parkinson](/source/Norman_Parkinson), [Antony Snowdon](/source/Antony_Armstrong-Jones%2C_1st_Earl_of_Snowdon) and Francis Goodman.<ref name="npg.org.uk"/> She was associated with many of the leading fashion houses of the day including [Christian Dior](/source/Christian_Dior), by whom she was dubbed "The English Rose". In their obituary, ''[The Daily Telegraph](/source/The_Daily_Telegraph)'' called her "supermodel of the 1950s".<ref name="Telegraph obituary" />

In later life, Dawnay was active in charity work, including [UK Youth](/source/UK_Youth) (for which she served as a vice president for 60 years), the Prince George Galitzine Library which she co-founded in 1994 in [St Petersburg](/source/St_Petersburg), the [Terence Rattigan](/source/Terence_Rattigan) Society of which she was the inaugural president and Phab.<ref name="Telegraph obituary"/>

She was appointed MBE, for services to young people, in the [2012 Queen's Diamond Jubilee](/source/Diamond_Jubilee_of_Elizabeth_II) [Birthday Honours](/source/2012_Birthday_Honours) (as Jean Mary Galitzine).

==Personal life==
In 1963, Dawnay married Prince George Galitzine, a son of Prince [Vladimir Galitzine](/source/Vladimir_Galitzine), in Rome.
