'''Jean-Talon''' is a provincial electoral riding in the [Capitale-Nationale](/source/Capitale-Nationale) region of [Quebec](/source/Quebec), [Canada](/source/Canada). It consists of part of the [Sainte-Foy–Sillery–Cap-Rouge](/source/Sainte-Foy%E2%80%93Sillery%E2%80%93Cap-Rouge) borough of [Quebec City](/source/Quebec_City).

It was named after former French colonial administrator of [New France](/source/New_France), [Jean Talon](/source/Jean_Talon).

==History==
It was created for the [1966 election](/source/1966_Quebec_general_election) from [Québec-Centre](/source/Qu%C3%A9bec-Centre_(provincial_electoral_district)) and parts of [Québec-Est](/source/Qu%C3%A9bec-Est_(provincial_electoral_district)) and [Québec-Ouest](/source/Qu%C3%A9bec-Ouest_(provincial_electoral_district)) electoral districts. The riding's current boundaries and those in 1966 share no territory in common, as the riding has continuously shifted westward throughout its history.

When the riding was created in 1966, it was located in the central part of Quebec City, and included the neighbourhoods of [Old Quebec](/source/Old_Quebec), [Basse-Ville](/source/Old_Quebec), [Saint Roch](/source/Saint-Roch%2C_Quebec_City), [Saint-Sacrement](/source/Saint-Sacrement) and most of Saint-Jean-Baptiste and [Montcalm](/source/Montcalm%2C_Quebec_City). Today, the entirety of the 1966 Jean-Talon riding can be found in [Taschereau](/source/Taschereau_(electoral_district)), while the modern Jean-Talon riding was entirely in [Louis-Hébert](/source/Louis-H%C3%A9bert_(provincial_electoral_district)) at the time.

The redistribution prior to the 1973 election saw the riding shift westward to accommodate the new riding of [Taschereau](/source/Taschereau_(electoral_district)) which would become the city's new central riding. The riding lost the neighbourhoods of Old Quebec, Saint-Roch and Basse-Ville to Taschereau. In return, it gained the rest of Saint-Jean-Baptiste and Montcalm and the city of [Sillery](/source/Sillery%2C_Quebec).

In the redistribution prior to the 1981 election, the riding lost a bit of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste neighbourhood while gaining much of the [Saint-Louis](/source/Saint-Louis%2C_Quebec_City) neighbourhood of the city of [Sainte-Foy](/source/Sainte-Foy%2C_Quebec_City).

In the redistribution prior to the 1994 election, the riding lost the remainder of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste neighbourhood and a large chunk of the Montcalm neighbourhood.

Prior to the 2003 election, the riding gained some more of Saint-Louis and half of the [Cité-Universitaire](/source/Cit%C3%A9-Universitaire) neighbourhood of Sainte-Foy.

In the change from the 2001 to the 2011 electoral map, it gained the remainder of the Saint-Louis and Cité-Universitaire neighbourhoods and all of [Plateau](/source/Plateau%2C_Quebec_City) from [Louis-Hébert](/source/Louis-H%C3%A9bert_(provincial_electoral_district)), but lost territory to [Vanier-Les Rivières](/source/Vanier-Les_Rivi%C3%A8res) and all of Monctcalm and half of Saint-Sacrement to [Taschereau](/source/Taschereau_(electoral_district)).

The riding is a traditional [Liberal](/source/Quebec_Liberal_Party) stronghold in the [Capitale-Nationale](/source/Capitale-Nationale) region; however, this was broken with the election of [Joëlle Boutin](/source/Jo%C3%ABlle_Boutin) for the [CAQ](/source/Coalition_Avenir_Quebec) in the a by-election held on December 2, 2019. Boutin resigning triggered the [October 2023 by-election](/source/2023_Jean-Talon_provincial_by-election), which was won by the [Parti Québécois](/source/Parti_Qu%C3%A9b%C3%A9cois) candidate, [Pascal Paradis](/source/Pascal_Paradis).<ref>{{cite web | url=http://www.electionsquebec.qc.ca/english/provincial/electoral-map/general-information-on-the-provincial-electoral-divisions-2011.php?bsq=643&section=superficie | title=General information on the provincial electoral divisions - Jean Talon | date=17 May 2021 | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170630071936/https://www.electionsquebec.qc.ca/english/provincial/electoral-map/general-information-on-the-provincial-electoral-divisions-2011.php?bsq=643&section=superficie | archive-date=2017-06-30}}</ref>
