'''Jasper House''' National Historic Site, in [Jasper National Park](/source/Jasper_National_Park), [Alberta](/source/Alberta), is the second site of a trading post on the [Athabasca River](/source/Athabasca_River) that functioned from 1813 to 1884 as a major staging and supply post for travel through the [Canadian Rockies](/source/Canadian_Rockies).

The post was originally named Rocky Mountain House, but was renamed to avoid confusion with the [Rocky Mountain House](/source/Rocky_Mountain_House) trading post on the [North Saskatchewan River](/source/North_Saskatchewan_River), becoming "Jasper's House" after the postmaster, Jasper Hawes, who operated the post from 1815 or 1817 to 1821. The first location was on the west shore of [Brûlé Lake](/source/Br%C3%BBl%C3%A9_Lake_(Alberta)). The second Jasper House was established at the northern end of [Jasper Lake](/source/Jasper_Lake_(Alberta)) in 1830, primarily serving travellers crossing [Yellowhead Pass](/source/Yellowhead_Pass) or [Athabasca Pass](/source/Athabasca_Pass).<ref>{{Cite web |last=Parks Canada Agency |first=Government of Canada |date=2017-11-28 |title=Discover - Jasper House National Historic Site |url=https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/lhn-nhs/ab/jasperhouse/decouvrir-discover |access-date=2022-04-07 |website=www.pc.gc.ca |archive-date=2022-04-19 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220419093807/https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/lhn-nhs/ab/jasperhouse/decouvrir-discover |url-status=dead }}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |last=Parks Canada Agency |first=Government of Canada |date=2022-11-02 |title=Culture and history - Jasper Haws - Culture and history |url=https://parks.canada.ca/lhn-nhs/ab/jasperhouse/culture |access-date=2025-06-03 |website=parks.canada.ca}}</ref>

The site operated until 1853, and was occasionally used until 1858 when it was reopened seasonally by [Henry John Moberly](/source/Henry_John_Moberly), who operated it into the 1860s. The post was officially closed in 1884 after years of inactivity.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Parks Canada Agency |first=Government of Canada |date=2022-11-22 |title=Management Statement - Jasper House National Historic Site of Canada Management Statement, 2017 |url=https://parks.canada.ca/lhn-nhs/ab/jasperhouse/info/plan |access-date=2025-06-03 |website=parks.canada.ca}}</ref> From 1891 or 1892 to 1894 the house was used by miner Lewis Swift. The building was destroyed in 1909 when its lumber was used to make a raft by surveyors for the [Grand Trunk Pacific Railway](/source/Grand_Trunk_Pacific_Railway). Apart from a small cemetery, no significant ruins remain. It was designated a national historic site in 1924, and is marked by a commemorative stone and plaque.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Jasper House National Historic Site of Canada |url=https://www.pc.gc.ca/apps/dfhd/page_nhs_eng.aspx?id=31 |access-date=2022-04-07 |website=www.pc.gc.ca |language=en}}</ref>
