**Jasem Yaqoub Sultan Al-Besara** ([Arabic](/source/Arabic_language): جَاسِم يَعْقُوب سُلْطَان الْبَصَارَة; born 25 October 1953) is a Kuwaiti former professional [footballer](/source/Association_football). He represented the [Kuwait national team](/source/Kuwait_national_football_team) at both the [1980 Summer Olympics](/source/1980_Summer_Olympics)[2] and the [1982 FIFA World Cup](/source/1982_FIFA_World_Cup).[3]

## Club career

Yaqoub initially played for the [Al-Qadsia](/source/Qadsia_SC) youth team as a volleyball player, before joining their youth football team in 1967, where he rose up the ranks and got promoted to their senior squad in 1970.[4] He initially signed with [Kazma](/source/Kazma_SC) before getting signed by [Al-Qadsia](/source/Qadsia_SC).

Yaqoub made his debut with the first team on October 2, 1970, in a 5–0 win against [Al-Shuhada](/source/Al-Jahra_SC), coach [Ron Lewin](/source/Ron_Lewin) subbed him on for an injured player in the game, the game would end with Jassim scoring four goals.[5]

One of his memorable goals came against [Pelé's](/source/Pel%C3%A9) [Santos](/source/Santos_FC), where he scored to enable a 1–1 draw.[6]

Jassim was the top goal-scorer in the [Kuwaiti League](/source/Kuwait_Premier_League) five times (1972/1973, 1974/1975, 1975/1976, 1976/1977 and 1979/1980).[5] In the 1979/1980 season, he became to first player to win the [Arabian Golden Boot](/source/GCC_Golden_Boot) with 31 goals in 26 matches.

He also helped his team win the [Emir Cup](/source/Kuwait_Emir_Cup) several times,[7] even scoring a bicycle kick in the final of the 1978/1979 Emir Cup final.

## International career

Jassim represented [Kuwait](/source/Kuwait_national_football_team) from 1972 to 1982 scoring 36 goals in 49 appearances.[8] He scored on his debut at the [1972 Gulf Cup](/source/2nd_Arabian_Gulf_Cup) against [Saudi Arabia](/source/Saudi_Arabia_national_football_team).[8][9] He went on to participate in the [1974](/source/3rd_Arabian_Gulf_Cup), [1976](/source/4th_Arabian_Gulf_Cup), [1979](/source/5th_Arabian_Gulf_Cup) and [1982](/source/6th_Arabian_Gulf_Cup) editions of the tournament, he was the top goal-scorer in [1974](/source/3rd_Arabian_Gulf_Cup) and [1976](/source/4th_Arabian_Gulf_Cup) scoring 6 and 9 goals. He also is the highest goal-scorer in the history of the [Gulf Cup](/source/Arabian_Gulf_Cup) with 18 goals to his name.

In 1980, He won the [1980 Asian Cup](/source/1980_AFC_Asian_Cup) with [Kuwait](/source/Kuwait_national_football_team) scoring four goals in the tournament and being named in the Team of the Tournament.[10][11]

Jassim appeared in the [1974 Asian Games](/source/Football_at_the_1974_Asian_Games) and the [1978 Asian Games](/source/Football_at_the_1978_Asian_Games), He also participated in [1982 World Cup](/source/1982_FIFA_World_Cup).[12]
