In 1257 it appeared as Iaroczino. In the 1600s, the town's name was already known as Jarocin. Jarocin's name in Yiddish is ירוטשין In german, town was called Kesselberg during the middle ages, and Jarotschin later. == History == thumb|left|Radoliński Palace, a 19th century depiction The lordship of Jarocin was first mentioned in a 1257 deed issued by Duke [Bolesław the Pious](/source/Boles%C5%82aw_the_Pious) of [Greater Poland](/source/Duchy_of_Greater_Poland). The town was conveniently located at the intersection of the [trade route](/source/trade_route)s from [Wrocław](/source/Wroc%C5%82aw) to [Toruń](/source/Toru%C5%84) and from [Poznań](/source/Pozna%C5%84) to [Kalisz](/source/Kalisz). It was a [private town](/source/private_town) of [Polish nobility](/source/szlachta), administratively located in the Pyzdry County in the [Kalisz Voivodeship](/source/Kalisz_Voivodeship_(1314%E2%80%931793)) in the [Greater Poland Province](/source/Greater_Poland_Province%2C_Crown_of_the_Kingdom_of_Poland) of the Kingdom of Poland.{{cite book|author= |title=Atlas historyczny Polski. It was part of the [Duchy of Warsaw](/source/Duchy_of_Warsaw) from 1807–13 during the [Napoleonic Wars](/source/Napoleonic_Wars), but was restored to Prussia afterwards. The town was included within the [Grand Duchy of Posen](/source/Grand_Duchy_of_Posen) from 1815 and the [Province of Posen](/source/Province_of_Posen) from 1848. It became part of the [German Empire](/source/German_Empire) in 1871. In 1889 it was included within the newly created Jarotschin District of the Province of Posen. Jarocin participated in the [Greater Poland Uprising (1918–1919)](/source/Greater_Poland_Uprising_(1918%E2%80%931919)) and had the first [soldiers' council](/source/Workers'_council) in the Province of Posen. In the interbellum Jarocin was a county seat in the [Poznań Voivodeship](/source/Pozna%C5%84_Voivodeship_(1921%E2%80%931939)). The town was annexed by [Nazi Germany](/source/Nazi_Germany) in 1939 during [World War II](/source/World_War_II) and administered within the newly formed province [Reichsgau Wartheland](/source/Reichsgau_Wartheland) as part of the district or county (''kreis'') of Jarotschin. The Germans devastated the memorial at the mass grave of the fallen Polish insurgents of 1918–1919.
