While attending [DeLaSalle High School](/source/DeLaSalle_High_School_(Minneapolis)) ([Minneapolis, Minnesota](/source/Minneapolis%2C_Minnesota)), Newberry starred in football, [track](/source/Track_and_field_athletics) and [basketball](/source/basketball). In football, he was a three-time All-Conference selection, and as a senior, was also a team captain. In basketball, he led his team to a state championship as a junior. In track, he excelled in [shot put](/source/shot_put) and [discus](/source/discus).

After retiring, Newberry enrolled at Howard University in the business school (2011–2012)<ref>http://www.bschool.howard.edu/go/inside/assets/bottomline/pub2012.pdf {{Dead link|date=February 2022}}</ref> and graduated into a position in investment banking with Wells Fargo.
