== Biography ==
Gomes was born on October 20, 2001, in [Rio de Janeiro](/source/Rio_de_Janeiro), Brazil. He grew up in Cantagalo, a neighboring community of [Cantagalo–Pavão–Pavãozinho](/source/Cantagalo%E2%80%93Pav%C3%A3o%E2%80%93Pav%C3%A3ozinho), a group of [favela](/source/favela)s in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, renowned for producing numerous jiu-jitsu champions.<ref name="BJJ Heroes – Jansen Gomes" /> From a young age, Jansen began training [Brazilian jiu-jitsu](/source/Brazilian_jiu-jitsu) under the influence of his brother, Jonata Gomes, and his father, Antônio Carlos "Bode," who holds a black belt in BJJ.<ref name="BJJ Heroes – Jansen Gomes" />

Gomes achieved recognition as one of the top young athletes in Brazil when he was just a [yellow belt](/source/BJJ_belt), winning his first National title. Coached by his father and multiple-time world champion [Ricardo "Rico" Vieira](/source/Ricardo_Vieira), he quickly became a prominent figure in Rico's social project in [Cantagalo](/source/Cantagalo%2C_Rio_de_Janeiro), and at the team's headquarters in [Copacabana](/source/Copacabana%2C_Rio_de_Janeiro).<ref name="BJJ Heroes – Jansen Gomes" />

As a purple belt, Jansen started competing on the [IBJJF](/source/IBJJF) circuit in the United States.
