**Johannes Petrus "Jannie" Claassens** (born 30 June 1969) is a South African former [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) player.[1][2]

## Playing career

As a schoolboy Claassens represented [Stellaland](/source/Leopards_(rugby_union)) at the 1988 [Craven Week](/source/Craven_Week) tournament. He made his provincial debut for [Northern Transvaal](/source/Bulls_(rugby_union)) in 1990 and played 102 matches for the union. During 1992, Claassens was selected for the [World XV](/source/World_XV) that [tour New Zealand](/source/NZRFU_Centenary_Matches) to mark the centenary of the [New Zealand Rugby Union](/source/New_Zealand_Rugby).[3]

In 1994 he toured with the [Springboks to New Zealand](/source/1994_South_Africa_rugby_union_tour_of_New_Zealand) and to [Britain and Ireland](/source/1994_South_Africa_rugby_union_tour_of_Britain_and_Ireland). Claassens did not play in any test matches but played in eight tour matches, scoring three tries for the Springboks. In 1993 and in 1996, he represented [South Africa](/source/South_Africa_national_rugby_sevens_team) in sevens.[4]

## Accolades

Claassens was voted as one of the five South Africa Young Players of the Year for 1990, along with [Andrew Aitken](/source/Andrew_Aitken_(rugby_union)), Bernard Fourie, [Ian MacDonald](/source/Ian_MacDonald_(rugby_union)) and [Theo Jansen van Rensburg](/source/Theo_Jansen_van_Rensburg).[5]
