**Janice Gross Stein** [CM](/source/Order_of_Canada) [OOnt](/source/Order_of_Ontario) [FRSC](/source/Fellow_of_the_Royal_Society_of_Canada) (born 1943) is a Canadian political scientist and international relations expert. Stein is a specialist in [Middle East](/source/Middle_East) area studies, [negotiation theory](/source/Negotiation_theory), foreign policy decision-making, and international conflict management.

She is the founding director of the [Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy](/source/Munk_School_of_Global_Affairs_and_Public_Policy) at the [University of Toronto](/source/University_of_Toronto),[1] where she is a professor.

## Life and career

Stein holds degrees from [McGill University](/source/McGill_University) (undergraduate and doctoral), and [Yale University](/source/Yale_University) (master's). She has been a professor at the [University of Toronto](/source/University_of_Toronto) since 1982, and was named a University Professor in 1996.[2]

Stein is a specialist in [Middle East](/source/Middle_East) area studies; negotiation theory; foreign policy decision-making; and international conflict management, on which she has lectured at the Centre for National Security Studies in [Ottawa](/source/Ottawa) and at the [NATO Defense College](/source/NATO_Defense_College) in [Rome](/source/Rome).[3]

Stein is the founder and former director of the [Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy](/source/Munk_School_of_Global_Affairs_and_Public_Policy) at the [University of Toronto](/source/University_of_Toronto) and Associate Chair and Belzberg Professor of Conflict Management and Negotiation within the University of Toronto's [political science](/source/Political_science) department. Stein has been considered the central figure in making the Munk School a go-to-place for international affairs in [Toronto](/source/Toronto). She has also been referred to as an academic entrepreneur.[4]

Following the end of her directorship at the Munk School, Stein became the senior presidential advisor on international initiatives to the former University of Toronto President, [Meric Gertler](/source/Meric_Gertler).[5]

### Honours

Stein was selected to give the 2001 [Massey Lecture](/source/Massey_Lecture).[6] She was awarded the [Molson Prize](/source/Molson_Prize) by the [Canada Council](/source/Canada_Council) for an outstanding contribution by a social scientist to public debate, was awarded a [Trudeau Fellow](/source/Pierre_Elliott_Trudeau_Foundation)[6] in 2003.

She is also the winner of the Mershon Prize for outstanding contribution to public education on issues of national security.

Stein has been awarded honorary degrees by [Johns Hopkins University](/source/Johns_Hopkins_University), the [University of Alberta](/source/University_of_Alberta), the [University of Cape Breton](/source/University_of_Cape_Breton), [McMaster University](/source/McMaster_University), and [Hebrew University](/source/Hebrew_University).[6][7]

In 2006, she was made a Member of the [Order of Canada](/source/Order_of_Canada).[8] The following year, she was awarded the [Order of Ontario](/source/Order_of_Ontario).[9]

## Publications and commentary

Stein was a long-time member of the foreign affairs panel on the [TVOntario](/source/TVOntario) television programs *[Studio 2](/source/Studio_2)* and *[Diplomatic Immunity](/source/Diplomatic_Immunity_(Canadian_TV_series))*, and continues as a regular guest on *[The Agenda](/source/The_Agenda)*. She has also appeared on [CBC Television](/source/CBC_Television)'s *[The National](/source/CBC_News%3A_The_National)* numerous times.

Stein has authored more than 80 books, book chapters and articles on intelligence, international security, negotiation processes, peace-making, and public policy.
