In 1959, aged 11, she was seen in a stage-version of ''[The Wizard of Oz](/source/The_Wizard_of_Oz_(1902_musical))'' at the [St Paul](/source/Saint_Paul%2C_Minnesota) Civic Opera. Following high school, she [matriculated](/source/Matriculation) at the [Curtis Institute of Music](/source/Curtis_Institute_of_Music), under the tutelage of Mme Eufemia Giannini-Gregory.

Having earned her [Bachelor of Music](/source/Bachelor_of_Music), she left for [Europe](/source/Europe) where she [debuted](/source/Debut) at the [Linz Opera](/source/Linz_State_Theatre) as Zerlina in ''[Don Giovanni](/source/Don_Giovanni)'' in 1969.
