She was born Jane Krom in [Brooklyn](/source/Brooklyn) on March 9, 1824, to a French mother and a Dutch father.<ref name="Dow 1965">{{cite book |title=Fifty Years of Sathers: The Sather Professorship of Classical Literature in the University of California, Berkeley 1913/4–1963/4 |last=Dow |first=Sterling |publisher=University of California Press |year=1965 |oclc=559566637}}</ref>{{rp|pages=30–34}} Krom married [Peder Sather](/source/Peder_Sather), a trustee of the University of California, in 1882 after the death of her first husband and Peder's first wife. == Relationship with University of California ==
