Her last volume was *To the Wren: Collected & New Poems 1991-2019* ([Alice James Books](/source/Alice_James_Books), 2019). Her honors included fellowships from the [Lannan](/source/Lannan_Literary_Awards) and [Guggenheim](/source/Guggenheim_Fellowship) foundations and a [Whiting Award](/source/Whiting_Awards). Her poems appeared in literary journals and magazines including *[Ploughshares](/source/Ploughshares)*,[1] *Electronic Poetry Review*, *[The American Poetry Review](/source/The_American_Poetry_Review)*, *[The New York Times](/source/The_New_York_Times)*, the *[Virginia Quarterly Review](/source/Virginia_Quarterly_Review)*, and *[The Antioch Review](/source/The_Antioch_Review)* and in anthologies including *[The Best American Poetry 1990](/source/The_Best_American_Poetry_1990)*.[2] Born in [Baltimore](/source/Baltimore), Mead lived in [Cambridge, Massachusetts](/source/Cambridge,_Massachusetts), until she was twelve. Her father taught ichthyology at [Harvard University](/source/Harvard_University). After Cambridge, she moved around a great deal with her mother and stepfather, who was a journalist, living in New Mexico, London, and Cambridge, England. She graduated from [Vassar College](/source/Vassar_College) and from [Syracuse University](/source/Syracuse_University) and the [University of Iowa](/source/University_of_Iowa). She taught and was Poet-in-Residence at [Wake Forest University](/source/Wake_Forest_University). After her father died in 2003, Mead managed the family ranch in [Napa County](/source/Napa_County,_California), [Northern California](/source/Northern_California). She taught at [New England College](/source/New_England_College)[3] and co-owned [Prairie Lights](/source/Prairie_Lights) in [Iowa City, Iowa](/source/Iowa_City,_Iowa).
