Hawkes completed her PhD funded by a [British Academy](/source/British_Academy) scholarship on the "Iconography of Anglo-Saxon sculpture of the pre-Viking period in the North of England". She subsequently worked on a 2-year post-Doctoral fellowship at the [University of Newcastle](/source/Newcastle_University). She has taught at the Universities of Newcastle, [Edinburgh](/source/Edinburgh), and the [National University of Ireland](/source/National_University_of_Ireland) at [University College Cork](/source/University_College_Cork).<ref name='UoY' /> She is one of the co-investigators of the ''Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Stone Sculpture'' project.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.ascorpus.ac.uk/team.php |title=The Corpus Team |publisher=Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Stone Sculpture |accessdate=27 September 2019}}</ref>
