# Jane Getz

**Jane Getz** (born 12 September 1942) is an American [jazz](/source/Jazz) pianist and [session musician](/source/Session_musician), who learned classical piano as a child, and began playing jazz at the age of nine. She lived in California early in life, but moved to New York City when she was sixteen. She found work with [Pony Poindexter](/source/Pony_Poindexter) and later performed with [Charles Mingus](/source/Charles_Mingus), [Herbie Mann](/source/Herbie_Mann), [Stan Getz](/source/Stan_Getz), [Roland Kirk](/source/Roland_Kirk), [Jay Clayton](/source/Jay_Clayton_(musician)), [Charles Lloyd](/source/Charles_Lloyd_(jazz_musician)), and [Pharoah Sanders](/source/Pharoah_Sanders).[1] She is not related to saxophonist Stan Getz.[2][3]

In the early 1970s, Getz returned to Los Angeles and became a [studio musician](/source/Studio_musician). She recorded country music for [RCA](/source/RCA_Records) under the name "Mother Hen" and appeared on albums by [The Bee Gees](/source/The_Bee_Gees), [Ringo Starr](/source/Ringo_Starr), [Harry Nilsson](/source/Harry_Nilsson), [Rick Roberts](/source/Rick_Roberts_(musician)), and [John Lennon](/source/John_Lennon). She wrote the title track for the 1973 [Jimmie Spheeris](/source/Jimmie_Spheeris) album *The Original Tap Dancing Kid*.[1]

Getz went into semi-retirement but began playing jazz again in the 1990s. She was a member of [Dale Fielder](/source/Dale_Fielder)'s quartet in Los Angeles in 1995. Her first jazz album as a leader, *No Relation*, was released in 1996.[1]

Getz' autobiography *Runnin' with the Big Dogs* was published in 2014.[4]
