Her career began as a sponsored engineering student with [British Steel](/source/British_Steel_plc) in 1990.<ref name=Journal/> On completion of her first degree she worked as a technical advisor at the [Teesside](/source/Teesside) [blast furnace](/source/blast_furnace) before moving into operations, becoming the first woman in the world to manage a blast furnace in 2004 – the [Corus](/source/Corus_Group_plc) cast house at [Redcar](/source/Redcar).<ref name=Inclusive/><ref name=Journal/> She was later the second woman in the world to manage a [coke oven](/source/coke_oven).<ref name=Inclusive/><ref name=Journal/>
