Tomaszewski's club career was mainly at [ŁKS Łódź](/source/%C5%81KS_%C5%81%C3%B3d%C5%BA), having been forbidden by Poland's [communist](/source/communist) government to play abroad before the age of 30, even after coming to international attention.

After the 1978 World Cup, he moved abroad, first to Belgian club [Beerschot](/source/K._Beerschot_V.A.C.), and then [Hércules](/source/H%C3%A9rcules_Club_de_Futbol) in Spain, before retiring in 1984 after two more years with Łódź. Poland went on to claim third place during a World Cup in which Tomaszewski saved two penalties in two different matches (from [Staffan Tapper](/source/Staffan_Tapper) and [Uli Hoeneß](/source/Uli_Hoene%C3%9F)), the first goalkeeper in [FIFA World Cup](/source/FIFA_World_Cup) history to do so. Tomaszewski went on to win a [silver medal](/source/silver_medal) with Poland at the [1976 Summer Olympics](/source/1976_Summer_Olympics), and also played in the [1978 World Cup](/source/Football_World_Cup_1978), where Poland disappointed in only managing to get as far as the second group phase. In 1991, he published a book titled ''Kulisy reprezentacyjnej piłki'' (Promise Publishing Institute, Łódź). Known for making many controversial statements, he criticised the [Polish Football Association](/source/Polish_Football_Association) (PZPN) on a number of occasions when the organization was run by Marian Dziurowicz and [Michał Listkiewicz](/source/Micha%C5%82_Listkiewicz). He was elected to the [Sejm](/source/Sejm_of_the_Republic_of_Poland) at the [2011 election](/source/2011_Polish_parliamentary_election), representing [Łódź](/source/%C5%81%C3%B3d%C5%BA_(parliamentary_constituency)) for [Law and Justice](/source/Law_and_Justice_(Poland)).{{citation needed|date=November 2022}}

He was married three times. He married his third wife, Katarzyna (''née'' Calińska), in 1988.
