Mangerud graduated from the [University of Oslo](/source/University_of_Oslo) with a [Bachelor's degree](/source/Bachelor's_degree) ([cand.mag.](/source/cand.mag.)) in 1961 and a master's degree ([cand.real.](/source/cand.real.)) in 1962, and in 1973 he obtained a Doctorate ([dr. philos.](/source/dr._philos.)) from the [University of Bergen](/source/University_of_Bergen), where he started a long lasting cooperation with Professor [Bjørn G. Mangerud was a visiting scholar at [Stockholm University](/source/Stockholm_University) in 1965 and the [University of Minnesota](/source/University_of_Minnesota) in 1972, and a visiting professor at the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, [University of Colorado](/source/University_of_Colorado_at_Boulder) on several occasions. He has been involved in supervising research activities at the [Norwegian Research Council for Science and the Humanities](/source/Norwegian_Research_Council_for_Science_and_the_Humanities) and the [Research Council of Norway](/source/Research_Council_of_Norway), and his own publications in academic journals number about 160.<ref name=ntb2/>

He was the first Norwegian to become an honorary member of the [Quaternary Research Association](/source/Quaternary_Research_Association), in 2006, and the [International Union for Quaternary Research](/source/International_Union_for_Quaternary_Research), in 2007.
