# Jan Machulski

**Jan Henryk Machulski** (3 July 1928 – 20 November 2008) was a Polish [theater director](/source/Theater_director), as well as a [film](/source/Film) and [theatrical](/source/Theatrical) [actor](/source/Actor). He appeared in more than 45 film roles and 70 theater roles throughout his career. [1]

## Personal life

Machulski was born in [Łódź](/source/%C5%81%C3%B3d%C5%BA), [Poland](/source/Poland), on 3 July 1928.[1] He was a graduate of the [National Film School in Łódź](/source/National_Film_School_in_%C5%81%C3%B3d%C5%BA) and the Polish National Acting School.[1]

Machulski was married to Polish [actress](/source/Actress), [Halina Machulska](/source/Halina_Machulska). He was the father of Polish [film director](/source/Film_director) [Juliusz Machulski](/source/Juliusz_Machulski) and Wojciech Machulski, spokesperson of a polish parliamentary group - Konfederacja.

## Career

Machulski pursued a successful dual career in theater directing, as well as [acting](/source/Acting).

As a theater director, Machulski production credits included the [Polish language](/source/Polish_language) adaptations of *Sen nocy letniej* (*[Midsummer Night's Dream](/source/Midsummer_Night's_Dream)*), *[Antigone](/source/Antigone_(Sophocles_play))* (*Antygona*) and *[Hamlet](/source/Hamlet)*.[1] He also produced and directed two of his own original plays, *Niebezpieczne zabawy* (*Dangerous Games*) and *Lek* (*Anxiety*).[1]

As an actor, Machulski appeared in approximately 70 theatre and 45 film roles over the span of his career.[1] Some of his most noted roles included *Rzeczpospolita babska* (*[Womanish Republic](/source/Womanish_Republic)*), *Sublokator* (*Lodger*) and *Psy* (*Dogs*), *Ostatni dzień lata* (*The Last Summer's Day*), *Rękopis znaleziony w Saragossie* (*A Manuscript Found in Saragossa*) and *Lalka* (*Doll*).[1]

Machulski appeared in a number of [television shows](/source/Television_show) and plays specifically for children. He appeared in the popular children's television series, *[Przygody Pana Samochodzika](/source/Przygody_Pana_Samochodzika)* (*[Mr. Car Adventures](/source/Mr._Car_Adventures)*) and in *[Podroz za jeden usmiech](/source/Podroz_za_jeden_usmiech)* (*[A Trip for a Smile](/source/A_Trip_for_a_Smile)*).[1] He also played the main character in *[Wyspa Złoczyncow](/source/Wyspa_Z%C5%82oczyncow)* ([Thieves Island](/source/Thieves_Island)).[1]

Machulski and his son, director [Juliusz Machulski](/source/Juliusz_Machulski), collaborated and worked together on several different films. Their first collaboration occurred in 1981 when he appeared in the film, *[Vabank](/source/Vabank)*, which was directed by Juliusz Machulski.[1] Machulski went on to star in several of his son's other films, including *[Kingsajz](/source/Kingsajz)* (*Kingsize*), *Deja vu*, *Kiler* (*Killer*) and *Vinci*.[1]

Machulski served as the [dean](/source/Dean_(education)) of the National Film School Acting Faculty for many years.[1] He was a recipient of the [Polish Golden Order of Merit](/source/Polish_Golden_Order_of_Merit).[1]

## Death

Jan Machulski died of a heart attack in Warsaw, Poland, on 20 November 2008, at the age of 80.[1][2]
